Did "Check Disk" work or not?

I tried to post in the check disk tutorial:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html?filter[11]=Performance%20Maintenance

But that post is now closed.

As a fan of Brink's tutorials, here are some comments - helpful comments, I hope :)

-------------------------------------------

1) I've been running the command

CHKDSK C: /f /r

for years.

Your tutorial gives the impression (to me, anyway), that only one option can be used at one time.

-------------------------------------------

2) I just noticed that there is a "Check Disk" command from within Properties > Tools

(That proves how quickly I see things :) )

I gave it a try with both options checked. First for the C: drive, then for the D: drive.

In both cases, I restarted to allow the command to work. In both cases, a black screen appeared, with the disk LED working constantly. Each drive took about 20-30 minutes (I did not check the exact time.) I assumed things were happening, as with CHKDSK.

Then the startup continued to the login screen. There were no messages, So I assumed that everything was OK.

Then I saw your note in this tutorial, "This method does not always run chkdsk when the computer restarts on some computers."

So, my question is: Did the check work or did it not work?

Your tutorial does not say "If it works this will happen..., whereas if it doesn't work, this will happen...

It might be helpful to tell the user what to expect and what not to expect :)

-------------------------------------------

3) I tried to find out what happened using the event viewer, as in WinXP. This is the first time that I have looked in the Vista event viewer. It was overwhelming :(

Can you please tell me how to look for the entries that relate to the disk checking.

Do you have a tutorial that explains all the event viewer entries (or perhaps a link to another site)?

ADDED LATER:

While waiting for a response, I used the old CHKDSK /F /R

I now see that this also produces a blank screen for 20-30 minutes. (WinXP gave a progress report, and told you what stage it was at)

So, I suppose the blank screen for "Check Disk" is normal :)

But I would still like to know how to check the event viewer for the CHKDSK messages.

My Computer

Hello OldGrantonian,

Did you by chance change the default boot screen? If you did, then you will need temporarily to do step 6 here to be able to see what is happening at boot while chkdsk is running.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
