Re: apply is in gray

Hello Tom,

This is normal. When you clicked OK in the "Startup and Recovery" window and OK in any confirmation pop-up, it applies the changes for you there. The only thing you need to do now is to click on OK in "System Properties".

Re: apply is in gray

Strange. Restart the computer to see if it will work properly afterwards.

If it still doesn't, then you might see if running a sfc /scannow command may be able to help. If not, then other than a clean reinstall, you might try a System Restore using a restore point dated when you think this may have worked.

In addition to everything Brink has suggested...

Perhaps a lateral approach may help. Which specific setting are you trying to alter, and why?

Hi H2S04,

He was wanting to uncheck the Automatically Restart option in "Startup and Recovery", but it is still checked after he checks that windows again after clicking on OK. Strange.

Hello Brink. The arrow in the screenshot seems to point in between the two tickboxes, so I had to ask

To the OP: The most frequent reason why people want to untick the "auto restart" box is because someone told them that's the way to see the stop code during a BSoD. True, that's one way, but a better way is to examine the minidumps which are created (one for each crash) in the \windows\minidump folder. If you're doing all this and because the machine is crashing, you may want to instead move a fow of the latest minidumps from \windows\minidump to another location, zip them up, and then upload the zip file here. Someone may be able to tell you why the machine is crashing.

Otherwise, one possible reason why your changes are not sticking is registry damage in the relevant area. Those settings are all stored under the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl
There should be an "AutoReboot" value there by default, set to 1. If you set it to 0 (zero) and reboot, hopefully the change will take hold and the UI may even reflect the new setting.

Re: apply is in gray

No problem H2SO4. I'm glad that you could remember where the registry location was for this.
