Vista 64 bit won't detect second HDD in "Computer"

A few days ago I received my Vista 64 bit DVD. I had moved all files and programmes I wanted to save onto the installed Seagate ST3500320AS I used as my second HDD.

I was operating XP Pro 32 bit which was upgraded from NT on the main HDD.

I eagerly inserted the Vista disc into the DVD drive and proceded to install Vista onto the main HDD. This was a full install not an upgrade.

All went well and I proceded to install the various drivers I required.

Now the time had come to move what I had put onto the second HDD onto the main one which now had Vista installed.

This is where my dramas began. Vista would not detect the second HDD in "Computer". It was picked up in "Device Manager". It recorded as working properly yet no information was available.

I contacted MS and the tech assistant took control of my PC and played around for a while. His conclusion was that there was an encryption code put on the HDD by XP and Vista was not able to access it.

His solution was to remove the HDD and connect it to a PC running XP to access what I have stored on it. Then reformat it. This drive has a lot of files I need and want to keep.

When I added this drive to my PC all I did was format it and stored what I wanted on it.

I talked to a local computer shop today and he said that it would take at least two hours for him to get into the drive as he would need to look at and access some part of the HDD. Connecting the HDD to a computer running XP would not do anything to help my situation. (Beyond me)

When I plug a different HDD into this PC it is recognised.

When I plugged the ? HDD into my son's laptop (Vista 32 bit) as an external HDD it would not recognise it either.

My PC consists of the following:

Intel BLKDP965LTCK MoBo
Intel Pentium D 915 2.8 GHz
Seagate ST3320620AS HDD (Primary)
Seagate ST3500320AS HDD (Secondary) (The ? one)

I see no reason for any of this to happen as all I did was the straight forward full OS installation with no fancy extra anythings.

Anyone had the same issue and more importanntly know the solution without me losing the data on it.

Thanking you in advance.
