Vista 64 - applications do not launch

beghetto

Hi,
I have seen a couple of threads talking about similar topics but none of them provided a solution :(

My vista 64 home premium worked fine until last week.
All applications started without problems and I was happy.

One day, I tried to click on some recently launched applications (such as Firefox which is my default internet browser) but this time, it didn't launch:huh:
When double-clicking, nothing was happening...

I tried with many other applications, even the Windows Vista ones such as media player and... the same... VLC media player, Firefox, Avira (my antivirus), IE 32 bits,... nothing launches!
The only apps apparently not impacted are IE7 64bit, Notepad and Comodo (firewall).

Both Windows Defender and Firewall are up and running but nothing happens when I deactivate Comodo and Windows defender/firewall. Still the same.

I don't know if this is related to a previous update installation (it's on automatic) but I can't make use of my laptop in such conditions.

Your help would be highly appreciated :o

what happens if you right click and "run as administrator"?

what about if you go directly to the apps .exe file and launch it from there instead of using a shortcut

you'll find it in computer/program files , then open the programs folder and launch it from the icon there

also goto start/run then type msconfig and hit return , in the tools tab look for "disable UAC" , highlight it and click "launch" then reboot and see if it works remmeber to turn it back on using the same method

Thank you for your suggestions. I did all this but it didn't help!:(

Nevertheless, I noticed that the apps can be launched in Safe mode.
Moreover, I have the feeling that all the 32 bit apps are no longer supported.
Could something be corrupted in the program that converts 32 bit programs for the 64 bit OS?

Or maybe a virus? Everything started with Windows Security notifying me that Avira was turned off and I couldn't turn it on when pushing the turn on button. (nothing was happening)
