Hello, I am Fixing a laptop for a person. The problem is that windows automatically logs out as soon as you log in. The laptop has windows xp home sp2. I used to be able to boot into safe mode ,but now it wont let me log in using safemode. I was wondering if anyone has a solution or if anyone knows how I could use the harddrive as a virtual pc on my laptop so I can play with the registry? I dont want to reinstall windows because i dont have xp home cd.

I know of another thing that does this, Did you r friend install a second Anti virus or firewall, I did this once with Avast and AVG. I have to do a system restore to fix it, not sure how you will go about this, very fuzy memories of it, think i hade to use some boot menu to access the system restore feature from the command prompts, but like i say its a little hazy since ive not used XP for some years now

If the machine is accessible through the network and you've got admin credentials, you can use a lot of the built-in administration tools remotely (from another box) without having to log on:

Event viewer - check whether anything is logged at the time the user is logged out.

Computer Management - check what groups these user accounts are in. Does changing their group memberships make a difference - for example, adding them to the administrators group?

Thanks for the help. I cant connect to the registry so I'm installing windows xp pro on a virtual pc so I can load the hives off the harddrive. The reason it only comes up with a black screen now is because I was told to replace userinit.exe with a non infected one. So I went online and downloaded it for windows xp home sp2. I think it might be a dodgey file. Could I copy userinit.exe from my virtual windows xp pro sp0 to a flash drive to the windows folder in the harddrive of the laptop or do I need The userinit.exe file from Windows xp Home sp2?

I replaced userinit.exe with a proper one and its still not working. I might just have to borrow the disk off a friend and reinstall

Yeah, it sounds like this isn't worth all the trouble it's giving you. If I were in your shoes, I would just reinstall and be done with it.
