Vista can't recognise my system backup images

This issue has popped up a couple of times on the forum, but none of the solutions seem to work for me...

I'm running Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS1330 notebook. I used the Vista back up computer tool to make images of the system c:\ drive and a second data partition. These were written to a USB hard drive as H:\ComputerName\Backup 2009-05-22 162639\etc. I have since formatted and re-partitioned the on board hard drive and expected to be able to restore my system and data onto the new partitions. I have tried to restore from a Vista Recovery CD and from within Vista, after re-installing, but it always fails to see the backup.

I have also tried copying the back up folder onto a ntfs partition, but it still wasn't recognised.

Any sugestions would be great! Perhaps a third party software which can unpack the images and copy them onto the appropriate partitions..?

Cheers,

Tim

...okay, so what I have done now is to use WinImage to restore the C:\ drive image onto a freshly formatted (different) ntfs partition and attempted to repair using the Vista DVD. It recognises the new Vista installation and has fixed the grub settings so that I can now try to boot it. The boot process starts, but will not finish (also not in safe mode). After making some initial repairs, the System Repair tools on the Vista DVD now gives the output that the computer cannot be automatically repaired and suggests I sent a report to Microsoft.

Show Problem Details gives the output:

Actually, WinImage has worked a charm for recovering the data partition. It simply read the image and allowed to Extract all the files onto an external drive. I haven't checked them all yet (I I don't have the correct software to open most of the files!) but what I have checked looked good. That's why I thought I would try it with the c:\ drive image too...

So what to try next? Continue with trying to repair the restored system image, or a new strategy altogether?

Any sugestions how to recover my system would be greatly appreciated! It took a long time to establish and I really don't want to start again from a blank OS :(

Thanks,

Tim

Is the partition you're trying to restore to smaller than before?

Image extraction is underway...

btw, is there something in the problem signatures that suggests the drive may be too small?
So, enlarging the partition solved the problem?

No luck. Exactly the same errors...

I'm over it. I think I'll just start with a fresh Vista install.

At least WinImage has allowed me to recover all the data from the backup images.

But take this as a warning to anyone considering placing all their trust in the Vista Ultimate system backup tools. It will definitely not support restore of the image after any significant changes to the drive (ie re-partitioning or so)!

Ciao,

Tim
