tcpip.sys black screen

I turned my PC on today and a black screen came on saying that windows could not be started because this file (tcpip.sys) was missing or corrupted. When I try using my install disk (as the black screen recommends) it tells me that it's the wrong version or something (I gather that it needs to be set up to be able to restore). I did however find a way to use this screen like Windows Explorer so I can copy files etc.

Is there a solution to this?

If not could you please send me a copy of the tcpip.sys file so that i could try overwriting my existing file?

Regards

Hi There,

Assuming you have your Vista DVD, stick it in, Choose repair, this will repair the files.

If it does not for some reason, give me another shout :)

Hello 64vista777, and welcome to Vista Forums.

If Glennage's suggestion does not work for you, then you can try this.

Here's a copy of that file from my Vista 64-bit Ultimate SP2 that may help.

You will need to take ownership of your original C:\Windows\System32\drivers\tcpip.sys file to rename it as tcpip.sys.bak to have it as a backup.

Afterwards, copy the downloaded copy of tcpip.sys file to that location.

Next, double check to make sure that the file as TrustedInstalled set as the owner.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks for the help, will give it a go.

Re Glennage: I tried that trick but computers like their little tricks so it told me that the disk does not support the version of windows that I am running. Which struck me as odd considering it was the very disk I used to install it.

Cheers

It may be that it is a older version on your installation DVD because of any Windows Updates or Service Packs installed afterwards. The one I posted is fully up to date, so hopefully it will work for you.

So I tried to replace the file and it didn't work. Which was to be expected since I couldn't make mself the owner of those system files.

It seems that I am going to have to re-install windows but here's one last shot.

So the best I can do now is put the CD in, choose repair windows and then at the screen where they ask which version to repair I cannot select my windows. So I tried clicking on "load drivers" which opens a box much like the "open" box in office programs. In this box I can copy, delete and create new folders but can't do much else. I can't see specific files in the folder.

I considered putting ubuntu on my 14gb partition and then manipulating the existing files through there but I don't know if that will work.

Let me know what you think please.

I appreciate all the help!

Thanks
Steve
