Ok, If this happened when you tried to open something in IE, it leads me to believe its some type of infection. I understand that you have mcafee but i dont personally like or trust mcafee fully. download malwarebytes and spybot. install. update packages, then disconnect from the internet. Do a restart. When you re-boot, once you log in, disable Mcafee and run these two programs. See what they pick up.
Once the scans are done, restart after they remove anything, if there is anything.

No problem. Make sure you also run spybot. This could be spyware i think. Im guessing its nothing major, kiddie code, but you still would want to be safe. You never can tell.

Ok Robin,
Try this, choose a document that you have, like a notepad document. Even though it has the internet icon, right click on it and choose open with. If a menu opens to the right when you highlight it, go down to the bottom and choose "Choose Default Program"
Then choose Notepad.
This should open it with notepad, and if it doesnt then we could be in trouble. If it does open, see if that changes your icon for that one file.

Also, i would suggest you back up any important files you have on your computer, just to be safe. Rather be safe then sorry...

Let me know,
Ben

Yes, you could lose data, but odds are against that. Just do a quick backup of any really important files that you might have and restore away!!!
