Data recovery using external enclosure?

nowhere

New Member
hi, this is my first post here so i hope im in the right place.
(mods, please move if not)

so my desktop recently bit the dust (apparently due to a known motherboard issue for which hp doesnt want to give me a replacement, but thats another story).

i should be getting my new laptop tomorrow, and i'm wondering if i can pull the hard drive from the desktop, pop it into an external drive enclosure, and copy the data onto the laptop. both systems are vista, though the desktop was 32 and the laptop is 64.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, you can.
You must buy the right external enclosure for your hard disk type (IDE or SATA).

Cheers

First off welcome to the Vista Forums!

There are some external usb enclosures that will take both ide and sata drives. You can also some with good drive cooling as well for a reasonable price.

Since both 32bit and 64bit Windows use NTFS 5.0 you should see ready detection and access once plugged into the new portable which hopefully will be seeing a large enough drive for your files to start with. But the old 3.5" placed in an enclosure can also act as backup drive serving a dual purpose.
