How do I use the Ratings stars in Vista details view?

Seems like this must have been answered somewhere, but I swear I could not find it so I gave up...

If I open a folder with pictures or videos in it, in details view, it shows a column called Ratings which has 5 blank stars in it.

This seems like a great way to rate photos and movie clips so I can search for favorites. However, I can't seem to figure out any way to APPLY ratings to photos or movie clips using those stars.

What's the deal? Is there a way to indeed apply ratings to pictures and movies using those stars, or ??? why are they there??

You should just be able to click on the star rating you want then two boxes should appear in the lower right corner of the open window. One says Save and the other says Cancel.

If they dont appear then try raising the size of the box the star rating is in or left clicking the rating like mad lol.

One way is to:

right-click on file>properties>details>mouse over star and choose rating>apply

Right, that works, but it's a HELLUVA lot of trouble! Why would MS put the stars in the "Details" view within Explorer and then NOT allow you to just click a star to rate the item??! Seems a bit... illogical...

As to photos, I found the easiest way to do that (the only practical way, really) is to open them up in Windows Photo Gallery.

If the Add Tags column on the right of the folder doesn't show up, right click the photo and choose "Add Tags...". Then you can choose whichever star you want as a rating and add tags and captions if you want from that window/column.

So if you want to go through and rate a bunch of photos that is the best way to do it. If you just want to rate one or two from within Explorer without opening it up in Windows Photo Gallery, then choosing Properties>Details is the way to go. (or, actually, it's about as quick to open it up in Windows Photo Gallery and go that route)

I can't figure out a way to do it with .avi's though. Let's say you have a folder of tv episodes in .avi format and you want to assign those Star ratings and have them show up in Details view under Ratings... How ? Is it even possible??
