vista x64 freezes at welcome

have been experiencing frequent crashes, freezes, and BSOD lately and after some research decided the video card/driver might be a likely culprit.

ran memtest just prior to see if RAM might be the issue; no errors

uninstalled video driver; and was prompted to restart to finalize removal of old driver

however, the system now freezes on startup at the welcome screen when starting normally or in safe mode

any suggestions would be much appreciated

Hi racdrvr, seems like a 3rd party start up application is causing this issue.
Open msconfig and disable all startup items in msconfig and restart your computer. Let us know what happens then?

In addition to what dinesh suggests, you could try booting into safe mode. This will load the minimun necessary to run the OS. If that boots then it is probably either a third party app or driver causing the problem.

Please keep us posted.

wasn't booting in safe mode either. after 5 tries, oddly enough, I was just able to log on, and vista did it's usual automatic install of a less current driver. I had downloaded a more current version which came in an executable package.

However, most of what I've read indicates that video drivers should not be overwritten but rather uninstalled and reinstalled which was my initial intent. Yet, I was just advised not to update with the current driver but rather use the version installed by Vista.

Are there any workarounds to prevent vista from installing the incorrect drivers, or any drivers in general for that matter, short of removing system files from the file repository, which I'd like to avoid if possible?

BTW - the BSOD, just prior to removal and reinstallation of the video driver, began with something along the lines of:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

. . .

That’s a pretty generic start to an error code, do you have any other information on the error code?

A good way to find out about these error codes is to simply copy and paste the code into the search box on Microsoft.com, which usually leads to some good help info.

Cheers

Thanks Ron. It took ages for me to find that fix.
