I am having a dilemma. My computer suffered for the blue screen of death, hence i need to reformat vista. When i first got vista, i put the license sticker on my PC but the sticker was defective and didnt stick very well. It eventually fell off and was never to be seen. It didnt occur to me that this was the only copy of my product key i had and now that i am trying to reinstall vista its become a huge problem. I was relieved to find the page with the SIW.exe method and since i havent formatted yet, i can still perform this trick. The only problem is, my computer cannot perform a successful boot up. It hangs on the Microsoft corp screen with he green loading tube and never ends, and if it does end, it hangs on a black screen for too long that i just give up and turn the machine off. I have tried using safe mode, but it also hangs after it loads all the necessary files and i have tried turning power off for one minute but still no luck. I really do not want to purchase another copy of vista just because of a stupid sticker and especially since windows 7 is on the horizon. Does anyone know how to get my computer working? Also, if i call Microsoft can they issue me with my product key? Surely there must be some way.

Yeah sure. Call the manufacturer of your PC or call Microsoft and they might help you to fix your problem :)

Why didnt you write down the key or back it up?
Boot into the WinRE and perform either a startup repair, or system restore to as far back as it will go (be sure to check the box for restore points older than 5 days).

ps- you have ultimate, did you not use the utility to create a complete pc backup and restore image?

Firstly i was an ididot for not writing down the key, i admit. Secondly, i backed all my stuff which is not a problem. In fact non of this is my fault, is the computer repair shops fault. I took it in to get noisy fan replaced and while it was there, my GFX card apparently became faulty, and then 2 days later my c drive became faulty. The hardrive problem is what made me need to reformat because even though he did a clone of the disk, sometime it has repercussions and causes the OS to not function properly....hence the blue screen of death. Luckily i was able to backup my PC before the blue screen eventually stopped making my computer not work at all. I cannot system restore as i cannot even get into windows. As for windows repair...thats on the installation disk right? Should i go into that and perform the repair? Thanks.

Ok
First you do the System restore and/or startup repair from the WinRE. Not windows. This means you boot into the Disk/recovery partition Recovery Enviroment, and select "repair"

If you created an image with vista, you can also mount this as a virtual disk, install/install on a virtual pc, and access the data.

Hey i figured out how to do system restore without having to actually login into windows itself. Bad news is i ran system repair and it couldn't fix it, secondly there were no restore points on system restore for some weird reason. Not to worry, i rang MS and they said if you send your reciept, photos of CD plus any other info they will email me my key which i can reformat. Luckily all my stuff was backed up prior to this boot up problem and is hopefully still safely existant on my maxtor external.

If you have a backup image you dont need the key to reinstall or activate windows. Even without the key you can still format, diskcheck, and reinstall Vista.

If you restore the image, it will already be activated. I have done it many times.
