I have already looked into this as a possibility however office was installed over a year ago and this is a repeating issue which has started in the past week. No updates, drivers, or new software has been installed in the past week. Nor has there been any changes to system settings.

Here is what I have found going back through video record of os activity.
The vss function that was failing was the system writer however it shows no last error and state (5)waiting for completion. Reboot resolved the issue however it is easily recreated by running U torrent. It would appear that U torrent is not currently vista compatible due to a conflict with VSS system writer. U torrent causes system writer to malfunction due to an improper request to the IVssWriterCallback interface.

Update on this issue. The conflict is caused by utorrent consuming all system resources as a result of removal of TCPIP max half connections limit. Before download speed was unlimited. Capping utorrents download speed at 500kbs has resolved the issue.
