Something very weird happened

I was about to shut down the computer, when the computer chrashed and frozed. So I wanted to restart it. However, when I wanted to do so, nothing happened; the screen remained black. I could hear the typical noise the DVD drive makes when the computer starts. The lights of the computer came on too, except that the icon for the hard-drive remained dark. I tried to start to computer several times, to no avail. Eventually, I removed the battery, and then tried to start the machine, and it worked.

I'm not sure what is going on, if it is a hardware or software problem. Any clues?

Thnx.

So you did get your computer to boot up?

Sounds like a hard drive issue...

that is what I suspect too, but I didn't receive any problem notification. Is the computer able to detect a hardware issue with the harddrive?
