Potential explorer.exe problems

Just switched on computer tonight & my security system prompted me to allow or deny access to an update. I denied it because my system doesn't ask me very often & didn't know what it was.

I clicked onto my Internet Explorer desktop icon & was told that I don't have access. The message seems to be linked to the fact that I blocked explorer.exe
Internet explorer has worked fine up to now, i've had vista for almost a year.

I haven't got access to anything like control panel etc either.

Weirdly (or maybe its not) Ive been able to start up internet explorer by right clicking on the icon and choosing "run as administrator".

Even if I wanted to, I can't seem to go back into my security and change access to this update because the options to 'allow' or 'deny' are greyed out.

Should I be aiming to allow explorer.exe?
I've read a few things about explorer.exe & confused.

I can follow instructions well but i'm not a computer whizz so any help would be great!
Thanks
