I have the same computer, and its hooked to a UPS. No battery icon on mine.
But I don't have SP2 on it.
That's my point. Having a UPS has nothing to do with having a battery icon in the tray.
BTW, I have SP1 and could not install SP2 because f this. It would not allow me to continue.
JimJoe, do me a favor and go to your Control Panel and click on Power Options... then click on Change plan settings. You should have just one column with 2 drop-down boxes. One says "Turn off the display", the other says "Put the computer to sleep". On my pc I have two columns with 2 drop-down boxes each. The 2 columns are labled "On battery" and "Plugged in" each having 2 drop-down boxes for a total of 4.
After talking to Acer and getting a run-around with some outsourced guy in India who was hard to understand they wanted me to pay for support. This pc is hardly 3 weeks old. They said if I install SP2 it will void my software support. I say it's a registry key issue. They will not help me.
The more important question I think is, "Does the
pc think its on battery/UPS DC power supply?" If so, It could be a faulty PSU issue. Kill the AC power, or Disconnect the UPS from the wall- not the pc, and see what happens. You may not lose power, but if the PSU is faulty, it may not be putting out enough juice to your system. Our desktop has this icon, but it doesnt show by
default unless there is an issue with the AC.
Try unplugging the system from the UPS, and plug the cord directly into the outlet. Is the battery symbol gone from the taskbar?, Can you boot? try a demanding game-does the pc crash?
If your PC is running on DC, it will not allow Utilities or SP installation. You can also check to see if it is PSU related, by setting Power management to "High Performance", and checking the CPU speed. it will most likely automatically downclock below 1GHz if it is running on DC as opposed to the rated Ghz speed.
The icon looks different for AC then it does for DC.
here is the AC icon (notice the power cord up against the battery)
That means it is running on AC with a DC backup, Runnng on DC does not show the powercord, and the "battery" indicator will fluctuate. If your UPS is plugged in, the battery will not fluctuate due to the continuous AC charge- so unplug the UPS from its AC power supply, and see what happens.
