Screen going to power save

My system unfortunately this afternoon had the power removed without warning. The system wasn't doing anything at the time but ever since will not boot correctly.
It gets as far as doing the windows bar across the bottom of the screen then when I would expect the screen to show the revolving circle the screen goes to power save mode as if there is no longer a video signal.
Booting into safe mode works but a normal boot is a none starter.
Windows suggests I look at start up programs, I would If I knew where they were.
Any ideas guys?
Thanks

Hi bogart,

Read through this excellent tutorial, it may give you some ideas. Another option is a clean boot.

Hi

Ive tried all options regarding startup programs none makes any difference.
One thing I have noticed is a few threads on here regading power and monitors going to sleep etc.
Ive gone to power options via control panel, change pan settings, change advance settings and there is NO option of sleep.
It lists Hard Disk then Wireless Adapter settings then USB, isnt the sleep option supposed to be before USB settings?

When you try to boot normally, does it sound as the computer boots but the monitor gets no signal or does it just stop dead?

Hi

PC did sound as if trying to boot. Notice I say did as problem is cured. I am a bit baffled as it appears the DVI cable was a little bit loose in the back of the PC. After removing it and re-attaching all ok. Now what I don't fully understand is why was it ok booting in safe mode. I could use safe mode, or go into the motherboard BIOS setup, as long as I wanted to ie display present all the time but as soon as I tried a normal boot the VDU went to power save as it wasn't receiving a signal?
Very confusing.

Anyway thanks for you help.

How strange. Sounds as re-attaching the monitor got your drivers to load as they should.

I know your problem has sorted itself out, but for any others hunting for a solution:

I've just had the same issue with an XP machine. The PC would boot into safe mode no problem, but the minute it went into 'normal' mode, the screen would blank and the monitor would go into power save mode. After a bit of unsuccessfull fiddling changing resolutions in safe mode and then rebooting, I went to device manager (while in safe mode) and uninstalled all of the display drivers. On reboot, the PC loaded windows as normal and found and re-installed the screen drivers. All seems to be working fine now. (fingers are still crossed mind!)
