My desktop computer sometimes makes a vry light grinding sound coming from one of the vents on the side. Even the slightest amount of pressure to that area sometimes I hear nothinng and at that time if I apply pressure then I hear it. Its all metal casing, And I keep it clean and way up off the ground. Could it be some type of echo or....

Hello Nate,

Does it sound like it may be a fan blade rubbing against something? I had that issue once with a LED light that got pushed a little to close to the fan blade while cleaning.

Hopefully it's not a hard drive. You might pop the side open to see if you may be able to determine what it may be better. A grinding noise is usually from a fan, DVD drive, or hard drive.

A fan touching a cable or similar can be scarry. I had that happened to me and I panic thinking it was my drive or even worse... my brand new GTX260 video card since at the time, I was messing up with Overclocking and Fan speeds.

Remember, the front of the case also have cables or wires running from it so one of they may be touching the fan as well.

If it is just a fading grind, it may be your HDD asking for forgiveness and to be left alone to rest in peace ;) :D

It started from the day I used the dvd drive for installing the sims 2. But the vents are at the bottom. I dought its the hd because even a tiny amount of pressure will stop the noise. Im wondering if its some sort of echo

GreatNate,

Where are you pressing to make the noise go away? Perhaps it is a simple case of the case vibrating...I used to have this happen a LOT on the company's Compaq Presarios...the cases did not fit together very well and when the fans, HDD's and CD's were all spinning (yes, these WERE too old to have DVD's :D), the removable covers on the cases would start buzzing like crazy!

I used simple electrical tape (mainly because it was black and didn't show) along the edge of the cover and it stopped this problem for good.

Not saying this is what is happening, just suggesting it in case it may help...

All My Best,

Michael

WOW!!!

I AM GOOD!!!!

;)

Try taking the cover off...see if you still get the noise. If you don't, it's the cover

and you can try the tape fix...if it still buzzes, it should make it easier to find with

the cover off...

Michael

Yeah, I have a Dell and playing a CD in the DVD player makes a bad vibration noise. I push the darn plastic case around to make it stop. Right now I have a big old paperclip under the right side and this stops the nasty noise when playing a CD. This is my work computer. Plastic is nice but metal for me when it comes to computer cases.
