windows won't boot

I'm a bit of a newbie but would appreciate your help.

This morning after leaving my HP laptop on all night, I found this screen that said status: oxc00000f info: the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

I downloaded and burned a windows install disc and ran the repair.

When I restarted, I got a different error: FILE: \window\system32\config\system, STATUS: 0xc0000e9, INFO: windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.

I've tried starting in safe mode and last known good, but I just get to those screens again.

I reseated my memory and my hard drive and still nothing.

The only think that I can think of that was funny yesterday was that my computer didn't like it when my wife unplugged our external drive after I used it to restore a jpeg that I deleted off the computer. She said there was some sort of error, but she could remember the exact words. Last night, though, it was running fine.

Thoughts? Help? Suggestions?
