Upgrade Dell XPS 400 problems

Hey guys, I'm new here. I have a Dell XPS 400 desktop that has the specs to run Vista, and I have a Vista Install DVD. My problem is that the computer will not recognize the DVD. I have it set to boot from CD first, and it ignores the DVD and tries to boot into Windows XP. It is not the DVD, because I have tried it on other computers and it reads it. Does anyone know what I can do about this? I would really appreciate some help on this, and if you need more info please ask.

Hey Ubuntu Vista.

All you need to do is put in the disk and run setup from WITHIN windows. So just boot into XP like normal and run Setup. From here, you can choose to do a clean install or an upgrade. If you do a clean install, just install it into the same partition that XP is on (assuming you want to replace it). All your old files will be SAVED in a Windows.old folder.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I have tried what you suggested. It does not auto run or even detect the Vista DVD when I would go to "My Computer" and look in the proper drive?

Yes I have one. I have updated the firmware from Dell's website as well. I have tried the DVD in both of my drives, just to make sure. Nothing is recognized.

Try getting another DVD then, or download and burn an install disk.

Hi ubuntu-vista, reboot the system and press F12 to enter boot menu and try booting from DVD drive and see if it works.

Try updating the drivers on the DVD drive.

If possible take a dvd drive from another computer and see if you can boot from the dvd.

I know! It really is. I have been trying to figure it out for a few days and saw this forum and thought I would see if anyone had ever seen something like this before.

I have seen a few with a similar problem. The only thing I can think of is a DVD dive that wont read the type of DVD it is burnt on.
