Fresh windows vista ultimate x64 install <CPU and GPU temperatures screwed>

Okay so I'm working on a gateway LX 6810-01 I was having a hard time getting the screwed up hard drive fixed with a fresh OS install.

After about 3-4 days, I finnaly got Vista Ulitmate x64 on it and all seemed well. I installed all the drivers from the gateway site for the lx 6810-01 and just left it running for about 10 minutes.. then it just shut off on it's own. I immediatley suspected a heat problem and downloaded a program called speedfan to moniter each individual core and the gpu's temperatures. It also lists other information such as Fan rpm's and Voltage readings.

With Speedfan, I noticed the temperatures were way WAY above nominal, around 64c just ideling. I saw the GPU get up to 73c with a game open before everything froze and the cores heated up enough to shut the computer off moments later.

The computer worked pefectly fine a week ago, he got some kind of virus on it and thats why we had to reformat it with the same OS it had stock.

The only thing we did with the hardware was take out the hardrive and put it in my cpu to try and run a virus scan on his hard drive as slave. The fans on everything including the GPU are all still running so we can't figure out why it would be hot all of a sudden. We have tried cleaning out all of the dust and to no avail.

Oh yeah, we can keep the computer working all day if we open it up and put a house fan on it directly.. cores run around 55c and the gpu runs around 66c this way.

What do you guys think the issue could be?

We got the GPU to run at a good temperature with an Nvidia gpu monitor.

The cores are still running hot though, and we an't figure out what the deal is.

Re: Fresh windows vista ultimate x64 install <CPU and GPU temperatures screwed>

Does the BIOS have any temp reporting capability? Speedfan may be incorrectly reporting the temps.

A GPU monitor is only a monitor, it doesn't actually affect the temps.
73c for a graphics under load sounds about normal, especially for a laptop.

Did you install any needed chipset drivers? (check device manager for any yellow ! marks)

Re: Fresh windows vista ultimate x64 install <CPU and GPU temperatures screwed>

Bios does have a temperature reading on it, along with voltage readings.

What I meant by GPU monitor was RivaTuner (Nvidia) it let me change the fan duty cycle from 25% to 100% and speedfan reported a 39c after the change.

There is only one thing in Device manager that isn't up to date and needs a driver of some sort, it's listed in 'other devices' and it's a multimedia video controller. I'm not sure exactly what it's looking for.

Gateway Support - Drivers & Downloads Vista (64-bit)

This is where I went for the basic drivers for the model, I got everything I needed from here and updated them all to the best of my ability.

I also noticed that the heat sink is kind of cold, and the fan is blowing out cold air, but I don't think there could be a problem with the mount considering it was never moved.

We took off the heat sink and cleaned off the old thermal compound and re-applied new thermal compound to both the processor and the heat sink.

The computer is now running with a game open and the case closed with no house fan on it at these temperatures..

GPU 60c
Core 1 59c
Core 2 52c
Core 3 57c
Core 4 54c

They appear on speedfan as high temperatures but their pretty steady. Are these temperatures pretty good with a game like WoW open?

Edit* I take it back, all the temps are slowly rising.

gpu = 64c
core 1 60c
core 2 55
core 3 58
core 4 55

Edit* (25 minutes later)

gpu= 75c
core 1= 63c
core 2= 56c
core 3= 59c
core 4= 56c

Re: Fresh windows vista ultimate x64 install <CPU and GPU temperatures screwed>

Are the CPU idle temps the same in BIOS as they are in speedfan?

What were the temps before the re-installation?

Those temps are high for the conditions, but it seems strange that they would 'suddenly rise' after a simple installation.

In Bios it lists 2 properties with temperatures, one is CPU wich is around 42c
the other is system wich is at 38c.

Re: Fresh windows vista ultimate x64 install <CPU and GPU temperatures screwed>

We never checked the temps before the resintall as we never had an issue with the cpu randomly shutting off.

We bought a new heat sink. Heres a link to it... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218007082289

Took us a while to put that big thing on but the temperatures read back about the same as the stock heat sink.

Were using two programs to monitor temps..

1)Speed fan (Now onnly using this one for the GPU)
2)Core Temp (Monitors each of the cores like speedfan and displays the same temps.

I assume both programs read from the ISA bus and the SMbus, is it possible that my temperature readings are off? The computer has now been running with the case closed and all temperatures around 59c (ideling) for about 5 hours straight.

Also I have read somewhere that some motherboards have their own software that can help keep your cpu cooled, I don't know much about this and it sounds a little flakey.. do any of you know what their talkig about?
