My Laptop doesnt Play DVDs

Hi,

Can anyone help. My Advent laptop can play CD - Roms, but it doesnt recognize any DVDs

There are no Lower and Upper Filters in Register, linked to the Drive .

I have uninstalled the drivers to the drive and even the uninstalled the and reinstalled ATA controller.

The Laptop is running Vista HP with SP1

Anymore ideas ???

Re: My Laptop doesnt Play DVDs

Does your drive fail to READ DVDs, or fail to PLAY them? When you insert a DVD, are there any error messages or anything that come up?

Sorry for asking such a basic question, but does your drive even support DVDs?
Go into My Computer and don't put a disc in and it should say something like this if it is a DVD supported drive:

Sorry if the image doesn't come out.

Re: My Laptop doesnt Play DVDs

in answer to both questions

  • It doesnt read DVDs and when you insert one it asks please insert disk
  • Yes it is a DVD- RW Drive. Its as played DVDs in the past.

Hope that answers your questions? Hope you can help?

Re: My Laptop doesnt Play DVDs

It seems this is a very common problem among laptops, I know there is a work-around but I got to tell you, my laptop doesn't have a DVD now because of it and I had to redo my whole OS with an External DVD someone lend me.

Google the work around, I know you'll find it, it has to do with removing a few things in your registry. If you attempt this, make sure you back up your registry and make a system restore checkpoint while you are at it... it may get ahiry and gloomy for you

Re: My Laptop doesnt Play DVDs

If you're going to be getting into your registry, I'd suggest doing a good backup. Here's a link to how to backup your PC:

Re: My Laptop doesnt Play DVDs

It may be outdated drivers- I really don't know.
If you tell me the model of your drive I could get you drivers. Also, what is your computer manufacturer and model so I could find OEM drivers.
