0X81000101 revisited

Getting the time out error 0X81000101 when I try to set a restore point on Vista X64 Home Premium. This happened right after trying to install a Creative external 24bit Live sound blaster driver updates.

I have read many threads and have done the following to no avail:
Turned off AVG free 8.5 Resident Shield.
Ran disk clean up and rebooted.
Turned off System Restore as Administrator, rebooted, turned on System Restore for C: drive only.
Made sure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is Running and set on Automatic and Started.

I have read a few regedit posts but am reluctant to try that yet since I can't make a copy of my registry right now with the failed System Restore. When I do try to create a System Restore point, it hangs forever. Task manager says it is not responding.

What is a poor noobie Vista boy to do?

Hello christodiablito,
It looks like the only option left is the registry edit, but first, download Ccleaner, it's a free registry cleaner with an option to save your registry before cleaning, (so if you make a mistake you can install the backup), it might not hurt your cause to clean the registry too. the link below will take you to the Ccleaner site. Good luck and please post your results. Thanks.

Thanks for the reminder. I installed CCleaner as a back up registry program and have "cleaned" the new computer before I make any more changes to the registry. Strangely, the Restore System function NOW cannot be selected as the window does not open even after many minutes.

I also tried an application called Shadow Explorer which is supposed to keep track of multiple copies of the System Restore creation points but it does not work either. Probably because I cannot create restore points. Attempting to uninstall this new application leads me to 0X80004005 error messages which I believe relates to email messaging, presumably back to the software company to explain why one is uninstalling.

I had no idea that Vista x64 was going to be so.....challenging, but I was warned.

You may have to wait more than "many minutes" for the window to open. leave it running for a bit and see what happens.

Just a thought, if the window still won't open, will it work in safe mode ?, if it does turn it off, reboot and turn it on, (all in safe mode).

Hello Mr. Nutz,

Thanks for tracking this but boy do I feel silly. After messing with this for 3 days, I just clicked Sytstem Restore and it came up within a minute as opposed to waiting about a half hour before and/or getting the 0X81000101 error message after finding it was not responding when I brought up Task Manager.

Even more interesting, ALL my Restore Points are present even after turning off Restore and rebooting which a forum thread said I would get a fresh start and they would all evaporate.

The only 3 things I have done are:
1. Install and uninstall a non-functioning Shadow Explorer to track the System Restores thru another application.
2. Install CCleaner and took out a very few misc. leftovers from a few other uninstalls.
3. Downloaded and installed the latest auto update from Windows.
4. Called my new Vista an unkind name.

So I am up and running and have absolutely not a clue as to why System Restore is back. How funny to have expended so many hours on a non? problem. Thanks again for your help.

C*

It never hurts to curse your vista now and again, i think you will find it was number 3, CCleaner, you can delete any and all things found by CCleaner, just dont forget to Backup your registry first.
Glad you got it fixed, good luck.
