Can a PSU cause heat problems?

I have been having alot of problems with a stock gateway lx 6810-01

Problem is the cores are running at like 60c and I know thats above normal.

My question is, can a stock PSU have anything to do with the cores running too hot?

What would be considered the CPU fan? We bought a new heat sink thats huge and says it runs around 2200 rpm's at max with a little knob you turn, but it runs at 900 rpm's at max.

So, PSU issue? Or heat sink issue?

Thermaltake - 120mm CPU Cooling Fan - CL-P0401

As you can see, the fan is built into the heat sink. The only other fans I see in the computer are 1 on the GPU and 1 on the PSU.

The only thing I can think off is that the PSU is super cheesy and not capable of handling the mobo + other hardware and it is suffocating itself.

That or your case is not well ventilated and/or you need to add a couple of fans for more airflow

Third, you can get into the BIOS and manually adjust your fans to 100% so they are blowing at max all the time, it will get noisier but it will cool down your temps.

Last thing I can say is perhaps you used to much, to little or no compound at all when you installed the heatsink.

And how would one go about manually changing all of my fan speeds? I'm looking in bios on that gateway and I see no such option.. The only relative options are Smart fan with an option to enable or disable and quiet startup.

I don't see anything else fan related.

OK, is "Smart Fan" disabled or enabled? If I am not wrong...

Enable = The Bios will dictate how much % speed to let the fan run according to heat temps.

Disable = No matter what, the fans will run at 100%... This is what you want!

did you fit the heatsink / fan correctly? what paste did you use? how much did you use?

have you tried removing it , cleaning and reseating?

fadedrs: We have speed fan already, both the bios and speedfan report the low 900 rpm's. It's a LiteON ps-6401-3 psu at 500w.

AstaLaVista: It was enabled, I disabled it yesterday only to find that the RPM's all ran the same.

Archie123: Yes we mounted it correctly with both the stock one, and the new one.
We used this exact brand of Thermal Compound. Dynex® - Silver Thermal Compound - DX-STC 100

At first we applied too much after watching a ton of vidoes about proper application of thermal compund.. After wards we put a little bead in the the center and set the heat sink on it again and let it spread.
(We used 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean after each application)


I believe too much is bad and too little is bad so we just did the "blob technique" according to a few videos.

(Just read a review on this paste, apparently according to one person it takes about 3 days to reach maximum heat transfer)

Before we blame the possible faultyness of the fan, could we say that the PSU could also be the reason for the low rpm's?

I wanna weed out everything before we take that hunk of metal out and get a new one and have the same problem.

The old heatsink with it's fan ran at 2200 rpm's but it plugged into a 4 prong looking little slot in the mobo, this new one plugs into a 3 pronger sticking out of the mobo.

mine has three also. with a 500 psu you should be ok i would say a faulty fan.

also mine came with a wired remote that i could turn the fan up or down in speed from the outside of the case.

Yeah a knob came with this one that has a low and high setting, low yields 400ish rpms, and high yields 900 rpms.

Wierd part is with the stock heat sink, we took it off too and applied new thermal paste correctly, put it back on and it had a fan mounted on it that ran at 2200 rpm's yet still showed the same heat on the cores as this big thing, coincidence?

i would say it is the fan something is wrong with it. or it is pluged in wrong to the motherboard. that could cause the low rpm

No, it's correct, it's plugged into the only space on the mobo that it can properly fit. I guess we will take it back tomorow and exchange it for another. What happens if it's the same deal then what should we do?

What does the fans 3 pin header on the mobo say? ie PWM, CPU, PWR

If it's a CPU fan, it should be connected to either CPU or PWM.

Have you tried plugging the fan into the 4 pin slot? A 3 pin will still work on a 4 pin slot.

it should match up will the clip on the cpu fan power cord. it should go into it only one way with one pin left out.

should be four pins sticking out of the mobo with a piece of plastic sticking up behind them the power cord should sit right into it and kind of wrap around the plastic piece sticking out.

sorry hard to explain.
