    Vista freezing after 5 minutes..

Just yesterday, my Vista started acting really strangely... it won't stop freezing after I have it turned on for about 5 minutes. I'll turn a browser on, or anything really, and after a few minutes, it'll freeze up and i'll wait to see if it comes back around, as a frozen internet usually would, but no, instead of going back to normal, the cursor comes back, but I cannot click on anything after that! Everything on the desktop freezes up and it never comes back to normal. I can't shut it down regularly or anything. After it froze, I tried to bring up the Task Manager, but when I did, instead of the manager, it would go black on me and bring up a pop saying that there was a "security error"..... security??... why would that even be coming up you know??

The only strange thing that I did that was abnormal, was I tried out my memory card slot that you can put your digital camera memory cards in so you don't need a USB cord...

But anyhow, about an hour after I did that, and everything seemed normal "my computer said it installed the new device, as usual".
My computer suddenly freezes up, a blue screen takes it over with some words on it (but it flashed too fast for me to read) and then flashed to black, and shut itself off!

That part was really strange to me, it definitely not normal.

Now it just keeps doing freezing up and I can't have it on for more than 5 minutes without it doing that... (unless i'm on safe mode, like now) I thought it might need scanned on safe mode, so I did, but that didn't help at all..

What I'm thinking, is it might be a driver problem? Maybe?
    Can anyone help me??

I have an Dell Inspiron 1525 Vista Home Basic.

    Hello celestialpocky,
I think your right, it looks like it is a driver problem, as you are already in safe mode and it's working ok, that tends to confirm it. (although my first thought was a memory issue).
Boot in to safe mode and carry out a system restore to the point before you put in the memory card. Reboot and post your results. Good luck.

It won't even let me go as far as bringing up the restore point.. at all.
I clicked it, and it just froze my safe mode like it did the normal one....
Its like it won't open anything.

Ok, this is not good, i would try and un-install the driver that was loaded when you put the memory card in, you may have to go to device manager to do that, as this is when it all started to go wrong.

The fact it locked up in safe mode is a bit of a worry, also you could try plugging the memory stick in and out a few times, just in case something got stuck the first time you did it.

Post your results when done, thank's.

    Gah.. it still didn't work.

I did what you said, put the memory stick in and out, and the laptop read it, but didn't have pop up options like it normally would.

I went on the regular mode, still froze after 5 minutes.

    I'm thinking it needs wiped...

Lets try one more thing before you try a re-install, open system config, it will look like this.

    Vista freezing after 5 minutes..-msconfig.png

    Vista freezing after 5 minutes..-system-config.png

Disable everything in service's, make sure the "hide all MS" box is checked, (bottom left) try it.

Disable everything in the startup tab, and try it.

This will disable all 3rd party software and just leave MS software running.

Re: Vista freezing after 5 minutes..

Download these two bits of software to clean the system, (both free) and run both. CCleaner will check the registry, (backup when promted) and malwarebytes will check for malware.

    CCleaner - Download

    Malwarebytes.org

    Then check the disk.

    How-to Use Check Disk

Using the Graphical User Interface (GUI)
    1. Open the Start Menu and click Computer.
    2. Right-click the drive you want to perform a check disk on and select Properties.
    3. Click the Tools tab in the drive Properties window.
    4. Click Check Now under error checking.
    5. To perform a complete check of your hard drive for errors check off both options in the check disk window that pops up.
    6. Click the Start button to start the process.
    7. If you are trying to check a hard drive that has open files you’ll get a message similar to the one shown below.
Click Schedule disk check. Disk check can’t check a hard drive that has open files. Your computer will reboot and check the disk before Windows Vista boots up.
    1. You can also try this fix.
    System Files - SFC Command

Post the results and good luck.

For that command part, I don't know which one to use on that link you gave me...
    That stuff confuses me.

    Ok, thats not a problem.

Boot in to safe mode and follow these instructions.

    Vista freezing after 5 minutes..-comand-prompt-2.jpg

This will repair all the system files.

Re: Vista freezing after 5 minutes..

I ended up redoing the whole laptop in my frustration since those didn't work either....
I just hope it doesn't do it again in the future.

    Thanks for your help!
