Can't Wake PC From Sleep

Hi Guys/Gals

Never use sleep function but last night instead of selecting shutdown hit sleep by mistake. Couldn't get system to wake from sleep and had to turn off by holding power button.

Today when switching system back on i get fan & case lights on , hdd and dvd activity. The keyboard is unresponsive (no lights) and monitor remains in stand by. Mouse gets power but doesn't wake pc.

Using reset or power button on case just restarts system to exact condition above.

Can't contact pc manufacturer til monday (pc 4 months old). Read quite a few other posts regarding vista sleep issues but haven't found anything that would seem to rectify this problem.

Any comments/tips gratefully recieved

Well I'm a beginner but I had a lesser important case than yours. I found you interupt a process of sleep if you try to wake it before about 5 seconds. Anyway, there are a couple of things you can try.

Unplug the power cord and plug it back in.

Pull out the wall socket thingy and put it back in.

Try doing something like booting into safe mode if you can.
The pc maybe still functioning but the monitor can't interact with it. Once you try to boot it, keep pressing F8 for about 10 seconds and then press enter. See if anything happens.

Could also be a shortcircut or something. Other people have had a similar problem.

Thanks for the reply.

Have tried leaving unplugged overnight and no change.

Tried booting into safe mode but as I said above I don't get any lights on the keyboard so don't think its getting power.

Also have tried a different keyboard and monitor and still the same with those.

Yeh, maybe you shortcircuted the power socket. Are you using a mutiadapter thing which is lots of sockets plugged into one or just wall sockets? Try plugging the pc into a different socket to see if that helps.

It could actually be a video driver problem because I have heard that out-of-date video drivers don't mix well with sleep.

Try using the same monitor and keyboard with a different pc and see if anything strange happens.

monitor and keyboard work fine with another pc. Also tried different power socket.

If it is a driver issue not much I can do about it :(

Damn annoying. Once I get it sorted I think I'll be disabiling sleep mode altogether.

so you cant reach the desktop at all...??

does it post on reboot..??, if so you could enter in ''safe mode'' & alter your sleep functions, also check your ''power plan'' settings, make sure its set to ''high performance...

i had a problem with pulling my machine out of sleep while it was set to ''balanced''... ;)

Monitor just sits in standby mode so don't see anything the pc might be doing. From the noises on the system would say it sounds like a normal boot up (i.e fan, hdd & dvd drives active).

Keyboard doesn't seem to get power (no lights for caps, num lock) so can't try to get it to boot into safe mode.

This is a hard one because your pc is obviously getting power but it's just not responding. Send an error report to microsoft lol.

Ok I found a good fix.

Open the case. Reseat all peripherals (memory, pci cards, the works) by removing and replacing or disconnecting and reconnecting cables. Try again. If the same thing happens watch the diagnostic lights (if there are any) and use those to troubleshoot. If it still fails take it back for service.

Most likely the video card is disabling the motherboard from booting.

Hopefully can get home from work tomorrow and ring the manufacturer while i'm sat in front of pc and see if they've got any ideas.

Don't want to open the case up just yet so they can't say i've voided the warrenty to get out of fixing it. Just having a look now but can't see any diagnostic lights. MB only has a manual power on & reset button/light. (Mb is Asus P5Q-E)

At worst its still under warrenty so the manufacturer can sort it out if i can't.

thanks for all your help

K you do that. I was pretty helpless helping you but still. As far as people here go, I'm a beginner (maybe not for my age)
