How to transfer old windows settings to new install?

Ok i reinstalled windows, but did not format, it kept my old windows install in a windows.old folder on my C:, how do i transfer all of my programs and settings to this new install?


i attempted windows easy transfer, but cant figure out how to do it?


any help appreciated!

Any programs that use registry settings you will need to reinstall. Programs I have that just use an .ini file in the same folder as the .exe I usually put under a folder I name Utils instead of under Program Files. That way often all I have to do is drag shortcuts and they'll work. Anything under Program Files the Custom installer is going to pile up into the Windows.old.

The Upgrade type of install is the one that supposedly keeps everything running under the new OS. Never remember trying one that worked completely so I often to the Custom as you have. You can look through Windows.old for some data or to remember what stuff you have installed, but that's about it. I copied it over the network to save on an external drive, but since there were over 200,000 objects inside, I had to use the MS RichCopy utility to do it.

Still, at least you can look through and jog your memory, then get the latest installer or whatever. If you have broadband it's easier just to download and install than to mess with the files.
