keep monitor on

How does one keep the monitor on a laptop (hp) from shutting down every 10 mins or so. I went to energy settings in control panel and put on "never" for turning off, and the cpu doesn't shut down, but the monitor goes off. Any help appreciated. I assume same thing with xp would work? I am recording streaming video onto dvd recorder and would like to do it without checking every 10 mins.
Thanks
greg

Re: keep monitor on

Hello Greg, and welcome to Vista Forums.

In the "Change advanced power settings link" on that same page, check to see what you have set for both the "on battery" and "plugged in", and "when the battery gets low" options. One of these may be set to turn the monitor off after 10 minutes as well.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: keep monitor on

Thanks Shawn,
I changed everything to "never" even deleted all options except one- laptop- on the xp machine. to no avail - still shuts off after a bit.
Just to see, I tried resetting power settings on my Vista machine, to 2 hours, and, even after restarting - it still shuts off after 10 mins. I'm at a loss. Any other ideas?
Thanks
Greg

Re: keep monitor on

Double check to see if it may be the screen saver set doing this. 10 minutes is the default time for it.

Re: keep monitor on

Thanks again and Bingo!
The screen saver setting was the culprit. Why on earth this doesn't come up in the display panel, I don't know. Anyway, problem solved.
Thanks again,
Greg
