Problems upgrading from 32 bit to 64 bit!

Hi guys.. I already had Vista 32 bit which was preinstalled on my computer.
I am wanting to upgrade to 64 bit which I have the CD of.
But whenever I run the setup I get
"the version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windoes youre running. Check your computers system information to see whether you need an x86 or x64 version of the program, and then contact the software publisher".
Does anyone know how I can still the 64 bit version still?

I think what it is trying to do is read the disk and use the utilities on it but because it is the 64 bit and not the 32 bit (that is installed) and it can't do it. You should still be able to install 64 bit. Just gotta put the disc in, reboot, and boot from disc when it asks.

I am not positive but I think that you need to do a fresh install to make it x64. Which means reformatting your hard drive and losing the data you don't have backed up. If thats not a problem then go ahead and do it. If it is you may want to wait to see if someone else has any input on that.

I hope it's a dvd.

Tipher is correct - you can't do an upgrade installation if you are changing bit versions - you need to clean install.

When you try to boot the dvd - how far do you get?

Start the machine - watch the black screen with white writing - you will get something like

F2 for setup
F11 for boot menu

Select F11 ( your F number may be different)

A pop up boot menu will appear after a few seconds.

Arrow down to cdrom drive - put the dvd in the drive - close it - press enter.

A few seconds later it should say " press any key to boot from cdrom drive" - press enter again.

You cant upgrade from 32 to 64 you have to do a clean install.

you should be able to boot from the DVD do you see "PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD/DVD"?

if you do not your bios is not setup correctly to boot from the CD/DVD drive first.

i got no idea what is going on, but it is not booting from the cdrom

i do have a 64 bit windows XP...
if i was to install that, would i then be able to install the 64bit vista by just going through the cdrom drive -> my computer

I can't say I've ever installed an OS by booting into the already installed OS and running an installer from the CD drive, I've always booted from the disc. Also I'm pretty sure you cannot downgrade to XP from Vista.

In your BIOS what is first in your boot sequence?

And some common sense questions I just feel compelled to ask:

What type of processor do you have?
Where did you get your vista x64 disc?

you can download this file from microsoft (and "run" it) and find out if you can upgrade:
