Solved Vista Boot Problem

Hi folks

I suspect my problem is NOT a Vista problem as such, since the boot failure seems to occur before BIOS POST. If this is the case, then clearly this posting does not belong anywhere within Vista Forums and could therefor be deleted.

However, in the hope that somebody can shed light on this problem, I will briefly explain the symptoms:

a) power-on
b) function buttons selection displayed
c) then, immediately windows boot manager displays a message, the essentials of which are:

a recent hardware/software change might have installed an incorrectly signed or damaged file.

it goes on to suggest: using a windows installation disk to repair computer
or press enter to display the boot menu then f8 for advanced boot options and select last known good.

It finishes the message with

Status: 0xc0000428

Info: windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file

I don't have an installation disk; pressing enter just reboots the computer and repeats the above message; I cannot access the recovery partition on the hard drive; I rely on Paragon drive backup but of course this is useless if the problem is pre-POST!!!

Can anybody help or redirect me?

Hello Archie123

In reply to your question, on startup and display of function selection , the only elements that can be accessed are BIOS setup and boot device order. I must stress that the start sequence does not reach the "horizontal moving bars" display (don't know tech term) and can only re-iterate that in my humble opinion the problem(s) originate at the BIOS bootstrap point of startup.

Your computer is getting past the POST.
Letter C of your list proves this.

Try safe mode.
If you can take a photo of the screen and post it.

Unable to access ANY mode other than described above. F8 just bleeps at me. Please note that the transition from function key select to the message described above is instantaneous.

It sounds as if the loader has become corrupt, you really need a vista disk to get over this.
The reason that I am saying it is not a post error is the fact you are getting a F8 message. This means it is trying to load windows and failing right at the begining.

Talk to the manufacturer of your computer, they should give you a restore disk.

Fill out your system spec and we may be able to help.

Hi roy69

Sorry to be a pain, but by system spec do you mean that I should include: make, model, bios stats, hdd size etc, as well as opp sys details? Please bear in mind that I am unable to access any of the more detailed specs for obvious reasons.

:o
EDIT: Ignore above. I now see the full list in my profile section.

What is the make and model of your computer. I.E. HP pavilion.
There may be a label on the back of your PC as well, this will be the key to your OS.
You will get away with using a recovery disk but will most likely have to pay for it.

Hi roy69

thanks for your most recent posting. I have spent many mins with HP tech on the phone and gone through a number of procedures with him, all to no avail.

I am now awaiting HP recovery disks (£25.00) by post (apparently from east Europe!).

I must admit, that on the evidence so far, I have a gut feeling that even the official hp recovery disks will not solve this problem.

I did a hdd image restore (Paragon 9 pro) using an image that I knew was ok.
In the first instance, Paragon's Win PE recovery disk failed to boot, giving me the infamous win boot manager message as described above. Then used Paragon 8.5 recovery disk (NOT windows based) - worked o.k and restored image to hdd. Paragon s/ware said restore o.k - but on re-booting got that same old message!!

It seems that any bootable software remotly associated with Windows fails - so why will HP recovery disks be any different.

My Computer

For those of you who have been following this thread, the H.P Recovery DVD produced the same result as described above i.e win boot manager message screen!! The end result, on referral to H.P tech support that the H.P Recovery DVD has failed, is that the desktop is now on its way to H.P repair facility. If I get to know what the problem is, I will come back on this thread with a description.

My Computer

If the recovery disk has failed then I would suspect hardware.
I am good with hardware but not an engineer.
Let us know what the outcome is.

Hi Folks

Got my HP laptop back today, and it's working again - initially in Vista new installation mode but, with an image restore and all Win and anti-virus updates downloaded, I am back in business:D.
The only feedback that I have from HP repair facility is that they replaced 1Gig of faulty memory and updated the BIOS, and that's it. Could this have been the cause of the boot failure or is there something they are not telling me?
It is worth remembering that I was able to boot into a Linux os recovery disk (Paragon disk backup 8.5) which used on-board memory, yet a Win PE recovery disk failed to boot. Ho-hum.

My Computer

May have been faulty memory.

The Paragon boot disc will be much smaller and less demanding than WinPE .
