"This device may not be working correctly"

I recently bought an iPod video, 2nd hand, with the intention of giving it to my father. I tried it on my computer (Vista Premium 32 bit), and the computer recognized the device and installed the software and the iPod worked fine.
I then took it to my father, who also has Vista Premium, and when I plugged the iPod into the USB port, the computer didn't install the software properly. I tried the iPod in several different USB ports and finally the computer "recognized" the device. So now the iPod works fine, except for one message that keeps coming up every time the iPod is plugged into the computer. The message being "This device may not be working correctly" and there are two options, the recommended one is to "scan device for errors" and the other to "continue without scanning". If I ignore the message and do nothing ITunes opens and the iPod works fine, despite the message. I have tried renaming the iPod drive, but the message still persists, I don't know why. I can only assume it has something to do with Vista and not the iPod.
Has anyone had a similar problem or might know how to stop this message appearing. It's just annoying, as everthing seems to be working fine.
Thanks for any advice.

I get scan for errors messages on USBs that have filesystem (FAT32) problems. The filesystem may have problems. Try scanning for errors and seeing what happens.

Hi, The first time the message did come up I did the recommended choice and scanned the device for errors. This didn't change anything, however. I don't recall the scanning coming up with any solutions and don't recall the scanning saying there were problems with the device. And the next time I plugged in the iPod, I still got and continue to get the same message. So now I either ignore the message or close the box and everything works fine. I don't believe the problem is with the iPod as it worked flawlessly on my computer. It is on my father's computer that the message appears and so I assume it has something to do with Vista.
