Downloads taking up way too much disk space

Hello throughout my time with vista, I have downloaded a few programs like Fortress Forever and tried to open them to install them.

Sometimes with programs like this, I double click on them, and the installation does not pop up. My computer just starts making the sounds like it's installing something (the clicking and such). This is odd because I didn't even start the installation. My computer starts filling up all of it's disk space while it is making the installation sounds and will keep on filling up my disk space until I turn off my computer. I lost like 6 gigs today because of this.

Can someone direct me how to get back my Disk Space?

Oh and no the game is not 6 gigs. It's like 1 or 2. And the game is no where to be found after this happens.

Well, for starts you can right click your problem drive and go to properties and run disk cleanup. And free up some space that way. You may have a bunch of temp files building up. That doesn't explain why your programs aren't installing, so for that I would suggest CCleaner. That's remove some more temporary files, log files, and memory dumps that could also be filling your hard drive. It also wouldn't hurt to run a registry scan with CCleaner (it'll ask if you want to backup, I suggest you do anytime you tinker with the registry so you can revert back if things go wrong). All that being done, you could have some sort of spyware running that is interfering with you installing programs, my suggestion is to try Spybot S&D, it'll ask you to make a backup of your registry (backups are always a good thing). Make sure you let it update, let it immunize your system, and run a full scan. I don't suggest letting the teatimer run, as it can be more of a pain then what it intends to be. I'm sure others would suggest otherwise. After all that is said and done, try to download a new copy of the game in question from a trusted source, try to install again.

Also worth mentioning, the freeware program SpaceSniffer will scan your hard disk and show you visually which folders are hogging up all your HD space, however it's not always a good idea to go clicking around folders and just deleting them.

I've had System Restore swallow 30GB in restore points on a 1TB harddrive. Try turning system restore off, restart, and turn it back on.

CCleaner can delete whatever restore points you choose if you go that route.
