Max amount of RAM for Vista 32bit?

Hi what is the max amount of RAM that Vista 32 bit will recognize?

I ask this because I have 3 gigs of RAM currently on my 32 bit computer and I want to go buy some more. I found a good stick for under 20 dollars that I don't mind spending on.

If I make my RAM go from 3 gigs to 4 gigs, will it recognize the extra gig? I heard that it will not recognize 4 gigs but I also heard that it won't recognize anything more than 4 gigs.

Thanks.

How big is your graphics card? That is included in the amount of memory your OS will be able to address.

Oh man I forgot how big it is.

It's a 9800 gtx+ which I think is overclocked. The memory in it is over 1 gig I remember that. I think it was nearly 2 gigs.

Hi Wifout Teef,

A 32-bit OS is limited to a total of 4gig of memory which includes the video card memory. Thus if your video card is 2gig and you have 4gig of system memory, the video card memory will be first used, then the system memory, thus you would have your video card memory plus the remaining system memory to make up the total 4gig. In this case you would effectively lose the other 2gig of system memory.

Here's a good article explaining this here - http://www.corsair.com/_appnotes/AN804_Gaming_Performance_Analysis.pdf. Note this is a .PDF file so you will need Acrobat Reader to read it (in case you don't have it)

Eh I've heard a lot about certain games not working with 64bit. Also a lot of programs aren't compatible. I don't think I'll get it. Thanks for your help

Do the research on the game you're interested in, then decide if you want to switch to 64. For what its worth most of todays games works well with Vista 64. Yes 64 does still have some driver and software issues (unfortunately), but these issues are slowly going away. Again, do your research before buying into the "64 bites for games hype"

Just my two cents

It's not like vista x64 can't run 32 bit software. Unless you have some super niche software on your computer, I don't think finding something that works is going to be an issue. Drivers sure, if you don't have some modern hardware then you may run into issues, but then again if you don't have some modern hardware I'm wondering how you're running vista. Do a bit of research, you'd be surprised how usable it actually is.

I have never had a problem with program compatability.. x64 doesnt mean than x86 (32-bit) programs will not work

Thanks guys I'll look into it.

If you didn't have such a beast of a graphics card I wouldn't be so quick to suggest X64, but you're clearly serious about giving your system max resources so it'd be wise to eliminate the OS bottleneck.
