Vista - setting password

I have had my computer for ayear now but have never used a password.

I want to lock my computer from now on and so i need to set my password....the screen for doing this asks for the old password.

is there a default password?

because I never set one up but I had the store I bought my computer from load all my programs and set up my computer for me.

but they are out of business now..so I cant ask them

Maybe they've used a password and then set it up to do an auto login using that password (so it was transparent for you but they could use it for administrative purposes like fixing something). Try to log out from your user and at the login screen, just press enter. If no password is needed, then leave that password field empty when adding a password from the Control Panel. If it requires a password and you can't get in touch with them... back up your files and format your computer... it's the easiest way to "recover" that password. There are some programs out there to help you crack/find that password but most of them will put spyware or malware in your PC so you'll end up formatting anyway.
