Can you boot into safe mode?
It sounds as if the installation has failed on one of the updates.

Had the same problem when trying to upgrade my hard drive on my Dell. Wanted to use the Vista install disk to install directly to the new, larger hard drive, and then upgrade to Windows 7.

What finally worked was to format the hard drive on a different computer--after that the Vista reinstall disk worked without problem.
