Desktop.ini files all over the place

I have connected several vista business machines onto a samba domain. When logging in for the first time vista creates a load of desktop.ini files all over the place on each machine and for each user. There is one in every single directory below c:\Users\, even the Startup folder. To remove them I must login as the user and manually set them to "hidden". This is not practical for lots of users on lots of machines.

Why does it do this?
Do I need one in every single directory?
How do I fix this problem quickly?

My Computer

Use a startup script

Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Dim p
p =
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced"
WshShell.RegWrite p & "Hidden", 00000002, "REG_DWORD"

Are you trying to hide the .ini files? If so, you can simply check the "Hide Protected Operating System Files" options in the Folder Options Dialog for each user/machine.

How about you uncheck the box, restart, then check the box, restart. I've had similar issues and that cycle's fixed them.

Don't know exactly why, but that's your place to start because that's the only place where you can change the settings to see the .ini files, please let me know how it goes! Thanks!

Hmm, okay how about you delete them all? You don't need them as they are safe to delete. But delete them as follows.

1.Disable the "hide operating system files" option that you were checking earlier.
2.Delete every single one that you find.
3.Enable that "hide operating system files" option again
4.Reboot.

Let me know if that works, if it doesn't I'm starting to suspect some sort of MalWare.

That didn't work.

Even worse, I now have two desktop.ini files in these directories. I didn't even think that was possible ?!?!?

Are some of them named desktop(2).ini ?

Tried, doesn't work.
Unless malware comes on Microsoft's Vista DVD, then its not malware.

If you delete them, an error occurs about not correctly loading the user profile.

Did you not try the global startup script I mentioned?

My apologies I came back to this thread this morning and got sidetracked and never responded. You can set the startup scripts in gpedit, I use it in my domain to set scforceoption=1 so users are forced to logon with smart cards.
