MAJOR Vista 64 problems - Bring to repair shop or restore on my own? Help!

I was just wondering if I should send my Vista Premium 64bit PC to a repair shop or restore the computer myself. My computer is incredibly slow and I get blue screens all the time now and problems with start-up. Now everytime I turn on my computer it says needs to check consistency in drives C: (NTFS) and another message for drive F: (FAT32 - mybook external hard drive). It tries scanning and then it freezes. I got the computer last summer and it seemed to start running slow after about a month. It has just gotten worse since and I can't even open my Windows Media Center now. I use my PC mainly for recording music. It just runs way to slow and freezes all the time and it is unbearable. I installed a PCIe card (AverTV Tuner) so I could watch TV on my computer shortly after I got the computer. I still want Windows Media Center on my computer but other than that, I would like to wipe my PC's slate clean and get the things I need again after it's restored. What do you suggest I do? HP sent my computer without a Vista disk (and I never made a backup :-(...), so is there anyway I can do everything on my own and the blue screen problem will go away and I can get my AverTV driver from Aver's site? What do you suggest I do? I have a band that I'm scheduled to record soon and I need my computer working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Also, My system restore is NOT on and I don't remember the last time it was. I just really need to fix my computer so please tell me what I should do to fix it. Thanks

well even if my computer is missing files, how do I get it back to the original settings? My computer has been like this for awhile and I just can't put up with it anymore.

Is it possible that I didn't install my AverTV Media Tuner right? I just plugged it right into the PCIe slot and ran the hardware setup wizard...I would just like some info on what I should do next to get my computer back to restored condition.

There's several ways to do this, but the easiest is to backup your files, then use the HP restore disks to reset your computer to the way it was when it left the factory.

You'll have to reinstall your programs after this, but there's nothing like the smell of a fresh copy of Windows in the morning! :)

Also, if you do this, then the OS will be presumed to be OK. If that's the case and you're still experiencing problems - then the problem has to be with the hardware.

Take it to a shop or do it yourself?

Well, first thing is that you can work here as long as you want - and then can choose to go to the shop whenever you want.

The benefits of doing it here is that it's free (plus any hardware you may need), and that you'll know more about how the system operates, and that you'll have the satisfaction of fixing it yourself. The drawback is that it's gonna take a while to pin down the exact problem.

The benefit of taking it a shop is that they'll use their experience to nail down the problem - which will likely take less time than it would here. The drawback is that they're gonna charge you - probably for the diagnostic work, the repair work, and a backup (if needed). Most places get $300 (US) or so for all of this.

well I would like the experience because I'm going to graduating with a CIS degree this December. I don't have any HP restore disks. I don't really have any disks at all besides a Vista Recovery CD that I downloaded from a site for 64 bit. Is there anything I can do with what I have to put it back to it's original factory setting?

should i order an HP restore disk from the HP site for my model #? On the HP site, it says:

"The HP Recovery Manager, installed on your PC, allows you to recover the original operating system, or create a set of recovery discs from the special recovery partition on the hard drive.

You do not need to purchase a replacement recovery disc to return your computer to proper operating condition unless the drive is corrupted."

So I didn't think I physically need the recovery disks. What do you think?

Okay, I tried running the HP Recovery manager and it froze at 71%. So I got on this HP Customer Service chat and we came to the conclusion that it was probably my PCI-E card (AverTV Tuner) that was probably causing it to freeze. I think it requires 450w PSU and I only have 300w. So I the PCI-E card out and tried running the hp recovery manager again and thought it was fine because it got to 72%, but now it froze at 72%! I'm going crazy. This is the only way I can restore my computer right now because I don't have any disks. AHH what should I do?

I'm thinking a lot of my problems came from me using my PCI-E card without running the 8-pin connector to the PSU. Also, I am going to upgrade my PSU to 450 watts. I'm thinking I have just put way too much on my computer and possibly hurt some registry files and maybe have some spyware so I purchased the HP recovery disks and I'm hoping I can fully restore my computer then without a problem.

remove your tv tuner then run the restore and see if that helps

Right, I know what you mean I go through this my self with my fujisu siemens laptop, I have to completely wipe the hard drive every week for some strage reason, that ussually resolves the problem.

Start up the computer, and press F8 until a boot up screen appears that gives you a few options, there should be one saying, "Repair my computer" then it will attempt to load files then select the recovery section it may take about 15 minutes depending on your computer specifacation, after you hae done all this you will need to run your computer setup again, Which may take about 15-60 minutes, but please note doing this will delete all the files on your computer and restore the computer to the factory state, If your still not sure, search google for the computer and how to recover it.
