Guys.

Currently using vista64 sp2 ultimate but want to dual boot with win seven oh theres something else.

1) i want to copy my vista64 500gb and move to another drive 1tb using
acronis - can i just connect the 1gb drive via esata and copy the
vista64 to that drive using acronis, i dont know how

2) Once vista64 installed to new 1tb drive i will create 2 partitions
and then install win seven on second partition for dual booting.

3) i really need help with the first bit of transfering my vista installation to new drive.

Thanks

Or should i just start again and install seven from fresh wiping out
vista, i worried about if all my games will work (i have alot of games)
and my apps.

I myself use Ghost and not Acronis, But I understand there is a "cloning" function in Acronis that will do what you want. Maybe you can find that in the documentation.

Hello Raks,

Sounds like you are on the right track. To clone your present drive to the new one you will need Acronis Drive Copy or whatever it's name is. I use the Paragon Hard Drive Manager, however these two apps do exactly the same thing.

Before you will start move your OS, clean and defragment the drive. You can connect the new drive using the USB and/or eSATA cable. Using the second one you will get faster transfer speed. Please remember the coping your drive to another one might take few hours, depending how much data is on the disk.

When done, you can create the second partition for the Windows 7 and even another one for your data so you could share this partition between both systems.

Cheers...

Guys,

Im worried, what it is that at present all my games and stuff are already installed on vista64 Ultimate, now if i dual boot i will have to still install most of my games on seven, it will be like having double of everything.

I was considering wiping out vista and do a fresh install with seven, then how would i know if all my games, apps or drivers will install on seven.

Should i just wait until seven gets established properly, i have loads of games and all work fine on vista

what should i do ?

Thanks all.

most games will work off of the primary drive or partition, its the save points you'll need to locate & transfer across to seven..... that can be a pain :(

the apps that for whatever reason wont fire up on seven, just reinstall them....;)

In addition to Skunkmash post, you could start from clean install Vista on the one partition, the Windows 7 on the second one and your games on the third partition. Guess you will have to install them twice from the Vista and Seven side, but the destination place for games would be on the same partition. I hope that way games could work without problem and you could safe some GBs space on the drive. I never done such thing, but think that's possible.

Guys,

Im not worried about space, i have around just over 5tb of space, im thinking is it really worth me replacing vista with fresh install of Seven, will all my games and apps work, thats what im worried about.

I could make out a list of all my stuff, if it helps.

Thanks all

The opinions about Seven and is it worth to run it may differ. It depends from the personal likes and dislikes. It is new OS, very similar to Vista with many new features. You might come across the software incompatibility issues, but not for long I think. Everyday more programs can run on it, so it won't be a problem. The same apply to the games. Please take a look at the Windows 7 Game compatibility list here.
