after vista service pack 2 update dvd drives have vanished

Hi there all
Ive scoured the internet to find the solution to my problem and ive ran out of solutions to my problem so i though id try the proffesional and worldly wise people here at vista forums so here goes...:)
i recently updated my vista to service pack 2 x64 which installed perfectly fine with no hangs or any visible errors. after the machine restarted one of my dvd drives was missing but it recognised the other which worked fine in burning and playing my CD/DVDs.
so i restrted my pc once more just to see if that may re-jog the system and it did both of my dvd drives were both visible so i though great no problems there. went to bed shutdown my computer. the next day i started it up as normal but noticed on the screen where its says " press del to run bios " or something like screen appeared it stayed on for a lot longer than normal i normally blink and its gone but it stayed on the screen for approx 2mins then proceeded to start up as normal.
checked my computer and this time they had both vanished. ran all my virus checkers even checked the screen where you can update the drivers but nothing gone.
i then restarted my computer again this time pressing del to check the bios.for my drives it found one so exited carried on loading up checked again and sure enough there was one found and again checked it to see if it worked and yes it burnt/played cd's and dvd's. i then uninstalled the service pack to see if the would change the situation but it didnt.. it now either recognises both none or one of the drives whenever it feels like it, even sometimes whilst both are showing after being on the computer a while one will disapear. ive tried looking for the upper or lower filters that apprantley can cause a problem but they dont even appear and reading on another forum they say if you cant see them then that isnt the casue of the problem. i havent installed any new software at all it seems to be when i installed service pack two that this all started. possibly a coincidence but it doesnt seem that way. both dvd burners are brand new pratically only about 2months old and as i say when they show they work perfectly. i have also tried the microsoft fix as stated on there website that didnt help but it did mess up my itunes

sorry for the long spiel but i though more info is better than less.
any help would be very very very much appreciated thank you very much in advance :D

another possible fix might be to check the cables and see if one might be not making contact fully. i had this happen to me and that ended up being the problem.

the first reply: I had found that site previous to me psoting here and neither of the methods worked for me but thank you

second reply: is it possible that the cables could be loose as i never move my computer and the dvd drives are both brand new and only fitted a 1month - 2months ago ?

thanks again for all your help

ive checked both connections on both drives. im not technical expert by any means but both connections feel realy solid and certainly nothing hanging out as if it has come loose.

it still seems to be hanging when i boot up my pc on the press del to run setup/bios screen.

and now when i click start then my computer. it used to be segregated the top half was my internal and external hardrive

the second tier was both of my dvd drives
now they have become mingled with no segregation
and i now only have one dvd drive showing ???
im at a complete loss :(

My Computer

ok so the view/ segregation problem is now sorted that was adjusted by right clicking selecting the view type sorry to jump the gun.. although i hadnt chnaged it in the first place but anyway sorted that minor problem out ... still puzzled by the dvd drives though hmm

have you recently updated the chipset drivers?

Not that i no of,
windows does install automatic updates and there are some that i install manually prompted by windows.
the only major thing that i no that i installed was the service pack 2 for vista x64
far as i no all the others for for security updates and so on..
i havent installed any new software realy.
the last was super anti spyware
i did got to device manager when the drives were showing for that brief time and clicked to search for updated drivers to see if that was the problem but it said they were up to date.
would windows updates automatically update my chipset drivers or would i have to do that via the asus website?

My Computer

before you updated to SP2 everything worked fine?

These are all the updates in the last month and this problem started around 2.5 -3 weeks ago

My Computer

i spoke to the people i bought it from and they said i would have to a fresh install of vista!!!
and i thought come! on there must be an easier way than doing that

the only thing i havent tried is a clock back from one of the sytem restore points. bbut ive never done that before and dont no of any possible dangers. plus would that even help

My Computer

at one point both drives vanished and instead of it being the dvd drives that were visible it showed as a removable disk.

just like if you plugged in a card reader with memory card inside it ?!?

My Computer

to access system restore go to control panel, system, system protection. then click on system restore and select a restore point to go back too
