Solved WPG not displaying B&W images correctly

Hello.

I have an issue with Windows Photo Gallery and viewing black & white images. The problem I am having is the white parts of the image seems to have an almost light blueish tint, and the black parts look like they were done using dark blue ink.

The thumbnail for the image, as well as opening it in paint and opening it in slideshow displays the image correctly.

So far, I attempted to fix this problem myself by changing my ICC profile in the color management settings multiple times, even rebooting my pc for some of the changes, as well as uninstalling my monitor drivers, with unsuccessful results. I do not know if this is an issue with my OS, my monitor, or my video card.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Upload a copy of the image.
Is the amage actually black and white?
The reason I am asking this is because some images that are supposed to be black and white do have a small amount of colour.
In paint there i a tool for removing colour try that.
Have you got the monitor set at the correct resolution and is the picture set to display the image full size? Antialias may be another reason for the colour, turn it off.

Thank you for the reply.

I can assure you that the original image is supposed to be black and white. As per your request, I will upload a desktop image of a black and white image I recently downloaded from the internet. Hopefully you will see what I am talking about.

Check your monitor settings, in particular its colour temperature (see the monitor manual for details on adjusting this). I can't see anything obvious with the image you posted, but it might help if we knew where you downloaded it from so that we can download it ourselves in order to compare it with your image.

Okay, I'm fairly certain that it is not my monitor, because, as I stated in my first post, the image is displayed correctly using paint and slideshow. It would seem that my problem lies with the WPG only. Also, I will upload the url of the image I posted, for comparison.

so the issue is with only one program? we know that games and certain programs will run their own colour profile i wonder if WPG does this to make photo images seem brighter/warmer? That said a blue tint suggests a cooler colour temperature.

so you have your monitor set to 6500k? could you check this just to make sure , some lcd monitors dont have a 6500k setting but their "graphics" profile is usually pretty close.

one way to check for sure is to use your graphics card control panel to alter the gamma of the image (while you have the image open) if the image alters then you'll know WPG doesnt have a set profile , you can then use your GPU settings to get WPG correct then apply to lock it , then alter your monitor settings so the rest of your programs are correct

if the image doesnt alter in WPG then its an issue with the program havein a locked colour profile and there isnt alot you can do about that i dnt think

Okay.

I did some adjustments on my monitor, mostly with contrast and color settings, and even defaulted to my monitor's factory preset. Did not fix the problem.

I also adjusted the gamma settings in my video card control panel, and it did not make a difference with the tint.

It is very likely that my color profile got screwed up for whatever reason, and it looks like I'm stuck with it, since deleting all my color profiles did not make a difference.

At the most, I will probably do a system restore back to a much earlier time, hopefully at a time where my color profile didn't screw up. If this doesn't work, then I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Anyway, thanks trying to help, guys. If anyone has another solution that hasn't been tried yet, please let me know. I would appreciate it.

Is your display set to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as default?

There is colour in this image. I have run it through Photoshop.
Load it into paint and change it to grayscale.

Well guys, the problem is solved.

I set my color profile to sRGB IEC61966-2.1, turned my computer off, and the next day, the colors are back to normal. Any B&W image I downloaded looks exactly like its thumbnail, and looking at it through slideshow, I cannot tell the difference at all.

It is rather strange that this worked, since I recall changing my color profile before to the one above, rebooted, and it didn't work. Then again, It was really late at night when I discovered this problem and my memory wasn't as good, so it could have actually been a different color profile that I tried, but didn't work.

Anyway, I managed to fix this problem, and I now know what to do if this happens again.

Again, thanks for all your help guys, I appreciate it.

Glad you got it sorted.
Colour profiles can be a pain in the %@$.
I have found that using a test card can help alot. This is good to get the monitor and printer working together. Adjusting the monitor to the printout is the easy way out.
