Computer will suddenly not copy and paste

I have noticed that lately when I try to copy and paste, either to an e-mail, or to my writing forum my computer will say something about Internet Explorer finding an error and needing to restart. My computer will then restart (whether I like it or not). I am a writer and when I copy from my documents to my site where I write I get this message. I can copy without problem; the problem lies in attempting to paste. I have been successful at copying and pasting with e-mails before, but for some reason now my computer will restart. This happens if I even attempt to copy and paste one sentence. I really need help with this, as if I can't write, I can't make any money. Can anyone help me with this??

Have you tried Firefox?

Do you know what would cause this issue in the first place? I find it strange, because sometimes I can copy and paste to places like e-mail, but other times I can't. I am a bit reluctant to download Firefox because I'm unfamiliar with it, and am not sure what will change on my computer as a result of downloading it.

Firefox is just a browser, like Internet Explorer.

Nothing gets changed to your files after installing this. all it does is import your settings from Internet Explorer (if you prefer how you like Internet Explorer) and puts an optional icon on your desktop.

It is about 5x faster than Internet Explorer as well. By the way, is your computer updated to the latest windows updates and what Internet Explorer version are you running?

From your original post it sounds like the problem is specific to Internet Explorer.

More information might help. Is your computer a recent purchase? If so you might
be entitled to some help under warranty.

If you have a tech savvy friend/neighbor/relative they can help you install Firefox
or save your files and reinstall Vista if worse comes to worst.

You never know if it is ardneh. i mean, internet explorer IS shipped with the windows operating system (since windows 95) and is basically tied to the system.

But its kind of strange why IE would take control of the whole Pc and reboot it automatically.

MDA400 makes a good point--avoiding the use of Internet Explorer may not
solve the problem. But it's "worth a shot".

We can't be certain of that, but it seems likely that you will be able to.
Try it and see.

So do you think that if I simply install Firefox that I will be able to copy and paste?

Worth a shot. I would only use Internet Explorer, in my opinion, if you have a fast enough pc and internet.

The loading time for IE is a lot longer than the rated 1.5 Sec. it takes Firefox to startup and load a page.

I'd use Firefox for overall browsing speed.

Okay, I have one last question...if I download Firefox, will my Internet Explorer icon remain on my desktop so I can switch back to it, if I want?

opie103,

Please check the following:

Open IE, click on Tools, then Internet Options

Click on the security tab, then click the button that says Custom Level.

Scroll about halfway down and you will see an option called Drag and drop or copy and paste files. There are three radio buttons underneath this - Disable, Enable, Prompt. Choose either Enable or Prompt. I'm guessing that yours is currently set to Disabled.

If you select Prompt, IE will display a message asking if it is OK for to access the clipboard. If you don't need this security, simply check Enable. Firefox has this same security option.

Let me know if this helps

Bdub- I just tried what you suggested. The Enable button actually was engaged, so I tried the Prompt button. Same thing happened - I got the message that Internet Explorer found a problem (or something like that) and was restarting. That was great advice, though! Think I will try Firefox. I'll let you know how it goes...

My Computer

I'm not sure what version of IE you have - you didn't state it. Check the drop down menus, etc. Newer versions has it right at top right with a gear icon. You need to find internet options. Keep looking - its there.

My Computer

Got it!!!! I found that my Internet explorer copy and paste option was already engaged, so I downloaded Firefox and was immediately able to copy and paste. You guys are all awesome!! Thanks so much to all of you:D
