Need help with permissions or read-only

    Hello,

My iTunes has suddenly stopped giving me access giving the message "The iTunes library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

The iTunes forum says that I need I need to uncheck the "read-only" attributes by right-clicking on the iTunes folder, select properties, unselect Read-only. So I did and received the message, "You will need to provide administrator permission to change these attributes, click continue or cancel. I clicked continue. It ran "applying attributes" and then I clicked ok. But iTunes still gives me the same message that the file is locked. And then when I back into properties the read-only selected again.

Please tell me how to resolve this problem.

    Thank you!

Hello 480ocean, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You may need to Take Ownership of the file and give yourself full permission for it.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn,

I attempted to use the manual way of taking ownership (via command prompt). How do I find the Full Path of the File for iTunes? The file path name is not shown.

By the way, under properties, then security - it says I have full control. So is the take ownership still necessary?

    Thanks for your felp.

    480ocean:

    Finding Path:

Open a new Notepad document. Go to your iTunes file, hold down the Shift
key and right-click the iTunes file, then click Copy as Path. Go to the new
document and right-click it, then click Paste. This should show you the Full
    Path.

This can help show you how to copy the full path of the file to paste it in the command prompt.

Copy as Path - File or Folder

You might also see if the options in this tutorial below may help remove the read-only attribute for that file. For example, step 5 in Option One of METHOD ONE on the iTunes folder to remove all read-only attributes for all contents in the folder. Be sure that you are doing this from within an administrator account.

    Read-only File and Folder Attribute
