Hi long time reader 1st time poster I have a prob that I could use some help on
OK
so I went to defrag my OS drive (600Gb Sata3.0 7200) and noticed that my scheduled defrags were not doing any thing and It had been over 30 days since the last defrag even though its set at 2am ever wednesday (PC on all most all the time) so I went and manually defraged it starting at 11:00pm and checked it at 8:30Am still going.
So I said forget it and tried defraggler ran from 8:40am till 2:30pm and was frozen at 73% killed the processes and tried again figuring it might be a fluke
but a few hours later froze at 73%
so my questions are
1.why is my scheduling not working in windows
2.Why after that many hours it had not finished in windows
3.Why is defraggler freezing at 73%

any thoughts are most welcome I am stumped on why this is happening (never had a defrag mess up on me before)

I also ran ccleaner and deleted any unnecessary files from the hdd so it would have to go through less data (drive is 50% full)

OK, the freezing could be due to HDD error, did you run scandisk prior to defragging? as for the scheduler not working, check that the scheduler service is running.

Checking the Task Scheduler Service

The Task Scheduler service must be running and properly configured to run tasks. If you had stopped scheduled tasks manually from the Scheduled Tasks window, the service stops and does not initialize the next time you start the computer. If the service is not configured to log on as the local system account, it may not start.

To check the settings for the service:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools.
  2. Click Computer Management.
  3. Expand Services and Applications, and then click Services.
  4. Right-click the Task Scheduler service, and then click Properties.
  5. On the General tab, make sure that the startup type is set to automatic, and that the service status is Started. If the service is not running, click Start.
  6. On the Log On tab, make sure that the local system account is selected, and that the Allow service to interact with desktop check box has a check mark.
  7. Click OK, and then quit Computer Management.

I find personally that windows defrag sucks... and that's being more than polite, I tend to use Raxco perfectdisk free trials are available from Disk Defrag Software | Defragment Computer | Disk Defragmenter - PerfectDisk

You could also schedule a thorough disk check by right-clicking on your drive in Windows Explorer, selecting properties, tools, and check now. Select both boxes, click OK and restart. The process will scan and try to fix any disk errors. My desktop ITB Samsung hard drive took around 115min to complete.

thx for the help guys I did a full check through hdd options\ tools\ and did both check boxes for next reboot. Everything was fine up to stage 4 but I fell asleep during stage 5 (worked a double) so when I woke the system was at the log on screen so not sure if it has auto reboot if no errors are found or not.
So tonight or tomorrow morning will try to do another defrag to see if it happens again

@ghost
every thing on that service is greyed out I can't even stop/start it if I wanted to

But they all match what you suggested except service to interact with desktop check box
