How To Remove Vista Sidebar

Before we start sorry to post a thread but the only other threads i found about this were ages old and surprisingly this site recommends posting a new thread rather than bumping and old one.

i bought an ASUS UX50 from best buy a few weeks ago and i have decided that not only do i dislike the sidebar, but i find it completely useless. i would like to know how to completely get rid of it. i have tried going to sidebar properties and unchecking the "start when windows starts" box, as well as removing it from my startup programs in windows defender, and also blacklisted the program in Spybot Search and Destroy. for some reason every time i boot it starts up and i have to repeat those steps again. if someone wouldn't mind giving me the location of the executable so that i can just delete it that would be great. or you could also try suggesting a million other things to try to keep it from loading at startup.

thanks in advance. long time lurker

Re: How To Remove Vista Sidbar

When you access the start list through Defender be sure to click "Show for all users" before disabling Sidebar.

thank you for your suggestion, i hadn't thought of that, but i didn't think it should matter as i only have one user. will reboot in a moment and see what happens

EDIT: back from my reboot and unfortunately it didn't work. i keep thinking it has to be something overly simple but i tend to over analyze things

That registry fix seems to be the same as Windows Defender options. Can you download Autoruns from here:

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Locate the Sidebar in the Logon tab, untick it and then delete it from the list (right-click the option and select delete)?

Re: How To Remove Vista Sidbar

apparently you can't just delete it from the drive, the registry tweak ran and worked for one boot but the next time it started right up like before, and the last one with the autorun program may or may not work we'll see after a reboot.

EDIT: no dice

To disable the sidebar, right click on the sidebar or sidebar icon, and choose properties:
sidebar-disable-1.png

Uncheck the “Start Sidebar when Windows starts” checkbox:
sidebar-disable-2.png

Then right-click on the icon, and choose Exit to close the sidebar:
sidebar-disable-3.png

Your sidebar should now be gone, and won’t start back up with Windows anymore.

I've already gone into the sidebar properties and unchecked "Start Sidebar when Windows Starts", then pressed "apply" then "ok".

But when I reboot, the sidebar comes back anyway, and the checkmark is back
in the box.

Is there a more permanant way to get rid of the sidebar?

Thanx! I tried Method 2, and it got rid of the Sidebar.

But now, whenever I start up the computer, I get 2 identical message boxes, stacked
directly atop one another.

The boxes are labeled "Windows Sidebar" and they say "Windows Sidebar is managed
by your system administrator." Each box also has an "OK" button.

When I click the "OK" button, the boxes go away, but return whenever I restart.

Is there a way to make the boxes go away permanently?

Have you tried deleting the option from Autoruns?

Open regedit and drill down to hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\sidebar export the key and post it here :)

I copied the key name, it is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar

Not sure what you mean by "export the key". But when I opened it with notepad, I got:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Compatibility]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Settings]
"SidebarDockedPartsOrder"="0x1,0x2,0x3,0x4"

Does that help?

Undo all the things you did by following the tutorial and restart.

Download and merge View attachment sidebar.reg and restart. Post back the results.

Ok, I reset the sidebar back to what it was via the tutorial. But when I downloaded
the "sidebar.reg", there was no "Merge" option when I right-clicked it. So I just
opened it normally. Now, the Sidebar keeps coming back when I restart, as it did
before.

Ok, I went back to the tutorial and tried the manual way for method 2, but got
the same result as from the download method:

If you are running Vista in the classic View, go to the Control Panel and begin to type search in the search bar. As soon as you type the s in search, several icons will appear. double Click on the icon windows sidebar and in the window that opens, remove the check in each item that pertains to startup. Hopefully your wishes will be met. Good luck.

Hmm, that didn't work. Should I just wait until I get my upgrade to Win7 before trying
again?

My Computer

I had done what I posted and it worked for me--I haven't seen the sidebar since. Don't know what to tell to do. Good luck and should you learn, a post back to this forum will help others.
