Vista - Windows Vista Problem - Cannot delete, move, rename or files

Hello
I have had this problem for a while now, and it has really started to wind me up lately.
I have read many threads and tutorials, and tried some out aswell, but nothing has worked unfortunately.
Whenever I try to move or delete a file, the box comes up:



But then once that pops up nothing else happens, and it just freezes. I have tried leaving it for a while and seeing if it just takes time but also nothing happened. Even if I click cancel, it freezes.

To close the window, I have to go into the task manager and close it from there, which restarts Windows Explorer.

When renaming a file or folder, I can type the name I want in, but once I press enter Windows Explorer freezes and I have to go into task manager again.

I know I might be one of millions to post about this problem, but I have tried my hardest and still cannot find a solution.

I have even tried two tutorials posted by an admin:

Cannot Rename or Move a File or Folder in Vista Fix
and
New Folder
but they did not work either.

If you think you have a solution, please tell me, as I am willing to try anything.

Maybe Freecommander can help: FreeCommander - freeware file manager

Hello Danso, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Since you have the 32-bit Vista, you can use Unlocker on the file to see if it will let you delete the file afterwards.

Hey Brink, thanks for the welcome

I have installed the unlocker, and it does pretty much the same thing. It lets me rename or delete, but then the box that pops up is still freezing once it's finished.

You haven't got any other suggestions have you?

I also tried FreeCommander, but that did the same

You might see if resetting the Recycle Bin may help in case it had gotten corrupted.

I have reset my recycle bin, and that has done something because now the progress bar goes green, but it's still freezing and not closing.

If you have other drives or partitoins, did you reset the Recycle Bin at those locations as well?

As a test, create a new administrator account and see if it works ok in it.

Does the problem happen with any files, or only ones in a specific location?

It happens with all files, and folders

It is possible that you might have some corrupt system files which are causing this problem. See if this turns up anything untowards System Files - SFC Command
