Hi, I have two 500 GB HDD. I installed software, which added a secret space to my second HDD. I uninstalled software and the secret partition turned into unallocated space. My second HDD now shows 289 GB (the unallocated space is 176 GB). I have tried to extend the HDD, so that I get my 500 GB back, but the information is greyed out. I have formatted the HDD, but it changed nothing. I only use it for backups. Is there anything I can do? helgaursula

It seems the software u used damaged your partition table.. Delete all the partitions in that hard drive, make the complete space as unallocated. Recreate partitions using vista disk management tool.

let us know the result :)

Hi thanks for your answer. I do not think that the drive originally had any partitions. It is my backup drive and I only keep backups in it. I reformatted it (now and lots of other times in the past (so I should have noticed a partition), but it did not help. It all came about, when I installed the Acronis Recovery Manager. It created a Secret Zone. I did not like this, because it took away my backup space. I read in Acronis help, that if one deletes Acronis 2009, a wizard comes up, which asks whether I want to delete the Secret Zone. I did this. However, the Secret Zone became unallocated space (I should have clicked on: distribute SZ). It is Drive H (Simple, Basic, NTFS, Healthy (ACtive, Primary Partition, Cap. 289.20 GB), unallocated 176 GB). So it looks like a Partition now. How to I reinstall it, after I have made it all unallocated. Do I really need a Partition?
(My other drive is C 465 MB, Simple, Basic, NTFS, (System, Boot, Page File), Active Primary Partition).

Backup all your data's in the problamatic harddisk.

Type diskmgmt.msc in your vista search bar, and enter.

Diskmanagement console will open, There find out your second hdd, right click on your 289.20 GB partiton and select delete volume.

Now you will get 467 gb unallocated space. Right click on the unallocated space and select new simple volume and create you partition.

Hope tis will hlp u
:)

Do you still have Acronis? or do you have a "recovery disk from acronis?
If you do then access the "secure" zone then try removing it using either the recovery CD or True Image itself, if it is still resident on your computer. You may find more help from the good people at

Acronis True Image Product Line - Wilders Security Forums
Good luck.

Re: Cannot extend HDD have unallocated space Thank you Delphin

Hi Delphin, I followed your instructions (although I had to go to Disk Management under Administrative Tools as my computer did not accept the command) and everything is now back to normal. Thank you so much. helgaursula

I'm not surprised. I refuse to ever use Acronis ever again. I used their disk management program once to try and create a new partition, and it totally screwed my computer. It froze during the creation process, and I had to restart. But instead of a login screen, I just got a black screen. I spent DAYS trying every trick on the internet to make it do anything, and finally ended up restoring it to Dell factory settings. Sorry to rant, just wanted to let you know I know how you feel.

Also, I've never heard anyone with a good story about using Acronis software...
