Hello, I am new here.

My rig currently consists of the following hardware:

GIGABYTE EXTREME EX-58
Intel Core i7 920 @2 .67 Stock speed
12 Gigabytes of OCZ RAM
2x WD 300 Gig Velociraptors in Raid 0
Creative X-Fi Ultimate Gamer Soundcard
PNY Performance Edition Geforce GTX285
XFX Geforce 8800GS 384 MB as PhysX card
FreeAgent 1TB Backup Drive
Razer Lycosa Keyboard
Razer Mamba Mouse
Samsung 2233RZ Monitor

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit System Builders SP1 OEM edition and have all the important updates installed, as well as most of the recommended updates installed, as well as Service Pack 2 (it comes with Service Pack 1 on the disc). I should also note that I run and use ESET Smart Security 4.0.

My problems started a few days ago. See these pictures for yourself describing the timeline and activities:

ImageShack® - s1llyg00f's Profile Page

Explorer keeps needing to restart, event viewer keeps shutting down when I try to open it (although not all the time), UT3 has problems and needs to close, and recently ONLY ONE instance of the EVGA Precision RivaTunerOSServer FAQ kept opening over and over and over again for no real discernible reason when I tried to close it in the task manager; I would close it and another instance of it would pop open. I would close it again, and yet again another instance of it would pop open with there always only being one instance. It simply WOULD NOT close until I rebooted; logging off and back on didn't help either. Once I rebooted it didn't open but I took the trouble of deleting the folder where it was located so the damn thing couldn't possibly pop up like that again and refuse to close.

Also, here are messages relating to the problem that I have kept and cut and pasted to a text file:

Help!!!

Sorry about that, yeah, a nice clean scan. I can't read the other images.
I suppose you've tried the System Restore route.

You can't read them? You should be able to, you just have to click on them three times in order to get it enlarged. I can enlarge the photos fine, just keep clicking until they enlarge. If somehow you can't get to the information in the photos then that's ok, but it's hard to describe the symptoms to you otherwise. The photos contain information from an MMC snap-in.

Oh, I haven't tried system restore yet honestly. I am kind of hesitant to try that until I know what I am dealing with, and frankly I don't have a clue at the moment. I do remember enabling HPET in the Gigabyte Bios right around the moment all this stuff started going wack. I should mention that ESET Smart Security caught a couple of infections, but that was before this all started and they have been quarantined. Scans since this all started have brought up nothing, and Smart Security is one of the best AV products you can get for your money.

I just now tried to run CCleaner in the recycle bin and explorer crashed. Then when I went to open Firefox to log back in it said Firefox was still running, even though Firefox wasn't open on the taskbar or visible in any way except through the Task Manager. So I had to end task Firefox through the Task Manager and then REOPEN another instance of it.

Should I System Restore anyway? I will do that if you think it's best, but I would like to know what the problem is first if possible and perhaps I could give you anymore needed info if you request it, I am certainly willing to do so to get to the root of the problem.

If you have a working restore point 7/29 or before it might be worth trying.
