I have an HP pavilion dv6500 that has been preinstalled with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The laptop is capable of running 64-bit, so is there a way for me to get it?

Hi, unless you use your pc for business applications wich need more processing power, it's useless to "upgrade" to a 64 bit version, it has many compatibility problems as i heard from people. Oh, and i don't know if there's a way to get a 64 bit vista ( other than buying it). Just wait for some experts asking ;)

A preinstalled 32bit Vista cannot be converted to a 64bit version. You will have to buy it from MS. But as Alex said, there is really nothing to be gained unless you have more than 4GBs of RAM.

I agree with Alex95 and whs about staying with 32 bit, however that's really a personal decision.

If you purchased your HP recently, you might be able to get HP customer service
to send you a 64 bit install disc.

There's nothing in the Vista EULA to stop you from switching to 64.
Unless HP's EULA restricts you from switching, it should be okay.

From Vista EULA:

" Alternative Versions. The software may include more than one version, such as 32-bit and
64-bit. You may use only one version at one time."

The way I understand it, this particular passage applies to Vista licenses purchased directly from MS. The installation disk contains both 32 and 64bit. But an OEM Vista is what it is. However, it cannot hurt to ask HP whether they would supply a 64bit version. What can you loose.

I should have said in my previous post that the EULA quote was from the
Vista OEM EULA download option at microsoft.com.

My Pavilion came with 64 bit preinstalled on it so i dont see where you would have a problem. If you ask customer care "very nicely" they might send you to the 64-bit OS disk and recovery programs disk at no cost or hopefully a small cost.

There is no way to change form 32 bit to 64 bit, everything in the core system has different drivers.

Sorry.
