I am trying to salvage my roomates pictures from a troubled hard drive. I have a Gateway DX430x with a WD 500gig sata hd, vista 32bit. Roomates computer is an AMD HP m7557c with a wd sata 300 gig, XP sp3. i just want to know if i can hook this up to anonter computer or somehow use another hard drive to drag pictures from it before i have to format the drive.

Can I do it on my computer? Do I need to use an xp system that accepts sata drives?

Please help!

You can add it to a spare SATA port on your motherboard assuming you have a spare 5.25" drive bay, or remove it, buy an 5.25" enclosure for it, and attach it via USB, removing the pictures before you format it. You might also find a USB drive docker for the internal hard drive.
