Windows takes or two hours to load

My wifes computer has been acting up lately by lagging. I tried to do a defrag, but when I went to log onto the computer the next day, It took over two hours for windows to open. I am trying to do some of the fixes suggested for Start up repair, but I can not even get it to come up to open the replacement disc.

I make it to the password screen and then I get the Welcome screen, but then it just shows the moving circle, but nevers opens.

Oh and by the way, I am another one who has no idea about computers other than how to turn them on, and I screwed that up!!

Please help before my wife kills me!!!

boot into safe mode...............restart your pc then tap th F8 key about once every second till yuor presented with a list of options

pick the safemode option (just safemode not with networking or anything) you use your up down arrows to highlight then return to select

when it boots into safemode (hopefully much faster) do this (i copied this from microsofts site to save time ;)...........

  1. Click StartCollapse this imageExpand this image
    VistaStartButton.jpg

, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

    Collapse this imageExpand this image
    SecurityShield.jpg

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  5. Click OK.
  6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
then reboot as normal see how long it takes , if it works come back and we can talk you through what to do next

if it doesnt work , or if it still takes an age to boot into safemode even we need to look into the operating system possibly being faulty
